Your Mazda 6 Mk3 (GJ/GL, 2012–present) has Mazda’s i-stop (idle-stop) system, which shuts the engine off when you come to a halt and restarts it when you move away. It saves fuel, but some drivers prefer to switch it off in heavy traffic or when manoeuvring. This guide shows how to turn i-stop off (and back on), and why it sometimes refuses to work on its own.
How i-stop Works on the Mazda 6
When you stop and hold the brake (automatic) or select neutral and release the clutch (manual), i-stop cuts the engine. Lifting the brake or pressing the clutch fires it straight back up. Mazda’s system is unusually quick because it restarts by injecting fuel into a cylinder and igniting it, rather than cranking from cold.
How to Switch i-stop Off
- With the engine running, find the i-stop OFF button on the dashboard (marked with an “A” inside a circular arrow).
- Press it once. The light in the button (or the i-stop indicator) confirms the system is disabled.
- i-stop now stays off — the engine will idle normally at a stop.
How to Switch It Back On
- Press the i-stop OFF button again so its light goes out, or
- Simply restart the car — i-stop defaults back to ON every time you switch the ignition off and on.
Why i-stop Sometimes Won’t Activate
Even with the system enabled, the Mazda 6 will skip i-stop to protect comfort and components. This is normal when:
- The engine is not yet up to temperature (cold start).
- The battery charge is low — common after a battery change or a lot of short trips.
- Cabin heating or demisting needs the engine running.
- The steering is turned, or the car is on a steep slope.
After a battery disconnection, i-stop also stays dormant until the car has been driven a little: start the engine and drive above about 7 km/h (4 mph), and the green i-stop indicator should come on, showing the system has re-armed. If it never works again, see our Mazda 6 battery guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Mazda 6 remember my i-stop setting?
No — like most systems it resets to ON every time you restart the car. You have to press the OFF button each drive if you prefer it disabled.
Is it bad to keep using i-stop?
No. The Mazda 6’s starter, battery and engine are built for it. Mazda’s combustion-restart method is also gentler than a conventional cranking stop-start.
Why did i-stop stop working after a flat battery?
i-stop only runs when the battery is well charged. After a jump-start or battery change it stays dormant until charge recovers and you’ve driven above 7 km/h; a few longer drives usually restore it.
Can i-stop be turned off permanently?
Not from the dashboard — the button is per-drive only. A permanent change would need dealer-level configuration, which most owners skip given the per-trip button.
If a warning light appeared alongside the i-stop fault, look up the code on autodtcs.com. To clear a service reminder, see our Mazda 6 service indicator reset guide.
