Disconnecting the 12 V battery on a Mazda CX-5 Mk2 (KF, 2017–present) is a straightforward engine-bay job. This guide covers safe disconnection, the steps Mazda lists for reconnection, and re-teaching the one-touch windows afterwards.
Where the Battery Is
The 12 V battery is in the engine compartment, under a cover. (Mazda’s i-stop and, where fitted, i-ELOOP use this same 12 V battery — there’s no separate owner battery.)
Disconnecting
- Turn the ignition on briefly then off (Mazda’s way to settle the systems), and remove the key.
- Loosen the negative (−, black) terminal first and lift the lead clear.
- If removing the battery, loosen the positive (+, red) next, then the hold-down.
Airbag/pretensioner safety: if you’ll be near airbags or seat-belt pretensioners, wait 1 minute after switching off (allow up to 5 minutes to fully discharge) before going near pyrotechnic parts.
Reconnecting & Re-teaching
- Reconnect positive (+) first, then negative/earth (−) last; tighten and refit the cover.
- Re-initialise the power windows — one-touch drops out after a power cut. See our CX-5 window guide.
- Reset the clock and check your settings.
The CX-5 doesn’t need the new battery coded.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which terminal first on the CX-5?
Always the negative (−) first, and reconnect it last.
Does it need the battery registered?
No — the CX-5 doesn’t require battery coding. Fit it and re-teach the windows.
Will I lose my radio?
No — the CX-5’s infotainment isn’t code-locked; just reset the clock.
Why won’t my windows auto-close after this?
Cutting power clears their learned position. Run the quick re-initialise.
For any warning light that stays on, look up the code on autodtcs.com. To clear the service reminder, see our CX-5 Mk2 service reset guide.
