Open the Hidden Diagnostic Menu

These instructions apply to the Mercedes A-Class Mk3 (W176) 2012-2018. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 12, 2026

The Mercedes A-Class (W176, 2012–2018) has a hidden workshop menu built into its instrument cluster that you can reach with the steering-wheel buttons alone — no diagnostic tool required. It reveals data the normal trip computer keeps out of sight: live battery voltage, temperatures, the VIN and software details. On the W176 (and its W246 B-Class and CLA/GLA cousins on the same MFA1 platform) it is a handy way to check a suspect battery or watch how the engine warms up.

What the Hidden Menu Shows

  • Battery voltage — the real 12 V system reading, far more useful than the warning symbol.
  • Outside temperature and speed readouts you can toggle on the cluster.
  • VIN and chassis/identification data.
  • Software and consumption figures used during servicing.

How to Open It

The W176 uses the left-hand buttons on the multifunction steering wheel. Have the engine off but the ignition on, with the cluster showing total mileage.

  1. Turn the ignition to position 1 (dash lit, engine not running).
  2. Use the left pad so the cluster shows the total odometer reading.
  3. Press and hold the telephone call-answer button first.
  4. While still holding it, also press and hold the OK button.
  5. Keep both held for a few seconds until you hear a click and the cluster switches to a data page (battery voltage or VIN).

Reading Voltage and Temperatures

Use the up/down keys on the left pad to scroll through the pages. Battery voltage appears as a number such as 12.3 V with the engine off; start the engine and it should rise to roughly 13.8–14.6 V as the alternator charges. A resting figure under about 12.4 V suggests the battery needs charging or testing — relevant on the W176 because a weak battery is the most common reason ECO start/stop stops working. Speed and outside temperature can be shown on the cluster too; step to those pages with the same buttons.

How to Exit

The menu only displays information, so you cannot damage anything. To leave, turn the ignition off, or press the back/return key on the left pad to return to the normal trip display. No setting is altered and nothing is stored.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this work on the B-Class, CLA and GLA too?

Yes — the W176 shares its MFA1 cluster with the W246 B-Class, C117 CLA and X156 GLA, so the same call-answer + OK hold opens the menu on all of them.

Why use this instead of the normal battery symbol?

The dashboard symbol only lights when voltage is already low. The hidden menu gives you an actual number, so you can spot a battery drifting toward failure before start/stop quits or the car struggles to crank.

What battery voltage is healthy on a W176?

About 12.5 V or more at rest, and 13.8–14.6 V with the engine running. Lower resting readings mean it’s time to charge or replace and re-register the battery.

Can I damage the car by entering this menu?

No. It is read-only diagnostic data; browsing it changes nothing and draws negligible power.

Nothing happens when I hold the buttons — why?

The cluster must be showing the total odometer with the ignition on, and you must hold the call-answer button before adding OK. Press them in that order and hold until the click.

If you opened this menu because a warning light appeared, the next step is reading the stored fault code — look up what any Mercedes code means on our sister site autodtcs.com.
