Reinitialise the Electric Windows

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated September 11, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Mercedes C-Class Mk3 (W204) 2007-2014.

Short answer: if the one-touch windows on your Mercedes C-Class W204 (2007–2014) stop working after a flat or disconnected battery, re-normalise each one: with the doors closed and the ignition on, hold the switch up until the window is fully closed and keep holding a few seconds, then hold it down fully open, then up again to close — that restores auto up/down and anti-trap.

Why One-Touch Stops After a Battery Change

Each door module learns the window’s end stops so that one-touch (auto) operation and the anti-trap protection know where the top of travel is. Disconnecting the 12V battery, or a flat battery, wipes that reference, so the window will only move while you hold the switch. Re-normalising teaches it the closed position again.

Re-normalise Each Window

  1. Close all the doors and turn the ignition to position 1 or 2 (do not start the engine).
  2. Pull the switch up to fully close the window, and keep holding for a few seconds after it stops.
  3. Push the switch down to fully open it, and hold a moment at the bottom.
  4. Pull the switch up again to fully close it, and hold a few seconds at the top.

Release — auto up/down and anti-trap should now work. Repeat the sequence at each window switch that lost the function.

If It Still Won’t Work

If a window reverses before it shuts, complete the hold-at-the-top step so it can relearn the seal position. If the switch does nothing at all, that points to a fault (switch, motor or module) rather than a lost normalisation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do my Mercedes W204 windows only move while I hold the switch?

They lost their learned end stops — usually after the battery was disconnected or went flat. Re-normalise each one: hold up to close (and hold), down to open, then up to close again.

Do I need a tool to reset the windows?

No. It’s done entirely from the window switch with the doors closed and the ignition on.

Does this also fix the sunroof?

The sunroof re-learns separately — see our W204 sunroof re-initialisation guide. The windows and roof each need their own normalisation after a battery disconnection.

The window still reverses near the top — what now?

Run the sequence again and be sure to hold the switch up for a few seconds once the glass is fully shut, so anti-trap re-learns the top of travel.
