The small red light that blinks on the dashboard of a parked Nissan Altima (L33, 2013–2018) is the security (immobiliser) indicator for the Nissan Vehicle Immobiliser System (NVIS, also called NATS). On this generation the blinking is normal and is a deliberate theft deterrent — a light that stays on steady, or an engine that cranks but will not start, is what points to an actual fault.
What the Light Does Normally
- The security indicator blinks whenever the ignition is in any position other than ON — that is, whenever the car is parked. It shows the car is immobilised.
- It is designed to draw almost no current, so it will not flatten the battery over normal parking periods.
- When you switch the ignition to ON and the system recognises your key, the light goes out and the engine is allowed to start.
When It Signals a Problem
Every time you start the car, NVIS checks the transponder built into your key. If that ID does not verify, the engine control module will not let the engine run. Suspect a fault when:
- The light stays on steady with the ignition ON, or
- The engine cranks but will not start (or starts and stalls within a second).
Common causes are another key or transponder held too close to the start button and confusing the antenna, a damaged transponder in the key, or a completely discharged Intelligent Key.
What You Can Try
- Use only one key. Move other keys, transponders and metal fobs away from the start button and try again with just the one key.
- Dead key battery? Touch the back of the Intelligent Key to the push-button start switch — the immobiliser antenna behind the button reads the transponder by contact even when the key’s own battery is flat.
- Still no start? Registering a new or replacement key to NVIS on this generation needs dealer or locksmith diagnostic equipment; it is not an owner sequence.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the blinking light draining my battery? No — the indicator is highly efficient and barely affects the battery, so it is fine to leave the car parked for normal periods.
Can I switch the blinking off? No, and you would not want to — it is the working immobiliser deterrent doing its job.
The light is on steady and the car will not start — what now? Try again with only one key, touched to the start button. If it still will not start, the transponder or the immobiliser needs diagnosis.
I lost a key — can I add a new one myself? Not on this generation. Key registration to NVIS requires diagnostic equipment at a dealer or auto locksmith.
