Understand the Anti-Theft Security Light

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated September 7, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Nissan Leaf Mk1 (ZE0) 2011-2017.

The small red security indicator that blinks on the dash of a parked Nissan Leaf (ZE0, 2011–2017) is part of the NATS immobiliser. Even though the Leaf is electric, it still uses the same anti-theft system as Nissan’s petrol cars — here is what the light means and when it signals a fault.

Why It Blinks While Parked

With the Leaf switched off and locked, the security indicator flashes continuously. That is the immobiliser advertising itself: the EV system will only go to READY when it recognises a registered Intelligent Key, and the blink deters theft. Its current draw on the 12-volt battery is tiny and normal.

What the Immobiliser Verifies

When you press the power switch, the system reads the electronic ID in your Intelligent Key. The control units must recognise that ID before the car will start (enter READY) — so a copied key without the correct chip cannot drive the Leaf away.

When the Light Signals a Fault

  • Steady with the power switch ON: the immobiliser has detected a fault — have it and its wiring checked.
  • Will not enter READY, with a key warning: the key is not being read — check the Intelligent Key battery and try the spare.
  • A replacement key will not start it: its ID has not been registered to this Leaf.

What Blocks a Clean Read

A flat Intelligent Key battery is the most common cause — the Leaf can still be started by touching the key to the power switch (see our dead-key-fob start guide). Interference from another key or a transponder on the same ring, or a damaged key, can also block the read.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the flashing draining my 12-volt battery? No — the draw is negligible. If your 12-volt battery goes flat while parked, look for a larger drain; note the Leaf tops up its 12-volt battery from the main pack only at certain times.

Can I switch the flashing off? No — it is a designed deterrent with no owner off-switch.

Green key light versus red security light? The red indicator is the immobiliser; a green Intelligent Key light warns the key’s own battery is low.

Can I register a new key myself? No. Adding an Intelligent Key ID to the ZE0 needs dealer-grade equipment.

If a no-start comes with a warning lamp and a stored code, our sister site autodtcs.com can help you decode it.
