The Nissan Micra (K14, 2017–present) has a factory cluster self-test you can run from the driver’s seat — no scanner, no dealer. Nissan calls it the combination meter self-diagnosis mode. It sweeps the gauges, lights every segment of the trip display and switches on all the warning lamps in one go, so you can quickly tell a genuine instrument fault from a harmless quirk.
What the self-diagnosis mode checks
The Micra K14 cluster combines an analogue speedometer needle, a fuel and engine-temperature gauge, and a dot-matrix LCD for the odometer, trip meter and on-board computer. The routine drives each of these:
- Gauge pointer sweep — the speedometer and the fuel/temperature gauges travel from zero to maximum and back; a pointer that fails to move is flagged as a fault.
- All LCD segments on the odo/trip display illuminate, so missing or dead blocks stand out.
- Every warning and indicator lamp the cluster controls switches on at once, regardless of the real switch state — an instant bulb/LED check.
- Live readings such as the meter’s battery voltage and seat-belt buckle switch status.
How to enter the hidden mode
- With the ignition ON, use the trip stalk button to select Trip A or Trip B on the display, then turn the ignition fully OFF.
- Press and hold the odo/trip reset button.
- While holding it, switch the ignition back ON — for a push-button Micra, press START without your foot on the brake so the engine stays off.
- Press the odo/trip reset button at least three times within seven seconds of the ignition coming on.
The cluster enters self-diagnosis: the LCD dots flash alternately, all odo/trip segments light, and the gauges drop to zero before sweeping.
Reading each stage
Each press of the reset button steps to the next test — the gauge sweep, the full LCD-segment test, the all-lamps illumination, then the live-data screens. Watch the needle complete its full travel; if it sticks or skips while the routine runs, the gauge or cluster board is the suspect rather than a sensor in the engine bay.
How to exit
The mode only operates with the ignition ON and ends the instant you turn it OFF. It also cancels automatically if you leave the reset button untouched for around 20 seconds. Nothing is changed — your mileage, trip counters and settings are preserved.
Frequently Asked Questions
My Micra has keyless start — how do I get “ignition ON”? Press the engine START/STOP button once without pressing the brake. That powers everything up (ignition ON) without cranking the engine.
Does this reset the service reminder? No. It is purely a display self-test and changes nothing. The service interval reset is a separate menu procedure.
Will it show why my engine warning light is on? Only cluster-internal codes appear here. For the engine fault itself you need an OBD-II reader plugged into the port under the dash.
The mode would not start — what did I miss? The two usual causes are not selecting Trip A/B beforehand, and not getting the three button presses in within seven seconds of switch-on. Reset the ignition and try again, a little quicker.
Is it safe to run more than once? Yes. The routine is read-only and harmless, so repeat it as often as you like.
If a warning lamp stays on after the cluster passes its self-check, decode the real fault before doing anything else — look the code up at autodtcs.com to see what it means.
