It is a mileage-based reminder, so it remains on the display after the work has been done until you reset it. On the D23 this is handled through the vehicle information menu using the steering-wheel buttons, and no diagnostic tool is needed for the owner-level reset.
When to Reset
Reset the service warning only after the maintenance it is prompting for — usually an engine oil and filter change — has actually been completed. The counter simply tracks distance and cannot detect fresh oil, so clearing it prematurely just hides the reminder and leaves your maintenance tracking wrong. That matters on a working vehicle: accurate service history supports warranty compliance, fleet records and resale value. Reset it once the service is genuinely done and the counter will start a fresh interval.
Before You Start
- Park on level ground, apply the handbrake and select Park or neutral.
- Switch the ignition to ON without starting the engine — the reset is done in the ON position only.
- Locate the steering-wheel controls: the D23 uses a MENU/navigation button and an ENTER (OK) switch on the wheel to move through the vehicle information display.
- Confirm the oil service has been carried out so the reset reflects real maintenance.
How to Reset the Service Indicator
- Turn the ignition to ON so the instrument cluster lights up, but do not start the engine.
- Press the MENU button on the steering wheel and scroll through the vehicle information display until you reach the Settings screen.
- Use the ENTER/OK switch to open Settings, then navigate to the Maintenance option.
- Within Maintenance, select the Oil (oil control / engine oil) item and press ENTER.
- A confirmation prompt appears asking whether to reset. Select Yes to reset the oil-maintenance counter.
- The spanner symbol and service message clear and the distance counter returns to its full interval. Switch the ignition off, then restart to confirm the reminder is gone.
Some earlier or simpler D23 clusters instead respond to a trip-button routine: with the ignition ON, press and hold the trip reset button until the maintenance figure appears, keep holding until it counts back to the full “oil good” interval, then release. Both methods reset the same counter.
If the Light Won’t Clear
- Make sure the engine was off and the ignition only in the ON position; the reset will not take with the engine running.
- Confirm you selected “Yes” on the reset prompt rather than exiting the menu without accepting.
- If the Navara shows a separate AdBlue or emissions warning, that is a different system with its own reset and is not the oil-service reminder.
- A steady engine-fault light is a stored diagnostic code, not a service message, and needs a scan tool to read and clear.
- Repeat the menu sequence from a fully off state if a step was mistimed the first time.
