Disconnecting the 12 volt battery on a Nissan NV300 (2016–2021) — to change it, store the van or work on the electrics — is simple, but the order matters and a few things need setting up again after. The battery is in the engine bay.
The NV300 was Nissan’s take on the Renault Trafic III under the Renault-Nissan alliance, sold from 2016 to 2021, after which Nissan revived the ‘Primastar’ name for the facelifted version.
Before You Disconnect
- Have your audio security code to hand.
- Switch off everything electrical and remove the key.
- Wait for the cooling fan to stop, then a further 5 minutes.
- On stop-start vans, deactivate stop-start first.
Disconnect and Reconnect
- Open the bonnet and find the battery in the engine bay.
- Disconnect the negative (−) first, then the positive (+).
- Do your work, or fit the new battery the same way round.
- Reconnect the positive (+) first, then the negative (−); make both clamps tight.
After Reconnecting
- Reset the date and time.
- Radio — re-enter the code if asked, reset stations and preferences.
- Re-initialise the tyre-pressure system and the electric windows.
- On stop-start vans, re-activate stop-start.
Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between the Nissan NV300 and the Primastar?
They’re the same van at different points in time: the NV300 (2016–2021) is the Trafic-based model these guides cover, and Nissan brought back the ‘Primastar’ name in 2021 for the facelifted version — same platform, revised front end.
Where is the battery on a Nissan NV300?
In the engine compartment — open the bonnet to reach the terminals.
Which terminal comes off first?
Negative (−) first when disconnecting; positive (+) first when reconnecting.
What do I lose when I disconnect it?
The clock, radio settings and some one-touch functions — reset the time and radio and re-initialise the windows and tyre-pressure system afterwards.
Is it the same as a Renault Trafic?
Yes — as Nissan’s version of the Renault Trafic it has the same engine-bay battery, so the order and after-reset list match across the Renault Trafic, Fiat Talento and Vauxhall/Opel Vivaro.
