The Nissan Pulsar (also known as Tiida or Sylphy in some markets) with the RE0F11A CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) requires proper fluid maintenance to ensure smooth shifting and long service life. This DIY guide explains how to safely drain, refill, and check the fluid level without requiring expensive dealer-only tools.
Before You Start
- Work on a flat, level surface with the parking brake engaged.
- Use only Nissan-approved CVT fluid (NS-3) or a high-quality equivalent.
- Basic tools required: socket set, torque wrench, drain pan, hand pump or funnel with hose, jack and axle stands.
- A diagnostic scanner is ideal for checking CVT fluid temperature, but you can also use an infrared thermometer near the transmission sump.
Draining the CVT Fluid
- Raise the vehicle securely with a jack and axle stands.
- Place a drain pan under the transmission.
- Remove the drain plug and allow the old fluid to drain completely.
- Remove the overflow tube inside the drain opening.
- Reinstall the drain plug temporarily while preparing to refill.
Refilling the CVT
- Access the filler port and use a hand pump or funnel with hose to add approximately 3.0 liters of new CVT fluid.
- Reinstall the overflow tube and tighten the drain plug with a new washer.
- Torque the drain plug to 34 Nm.
- Lower the vehicle back to the ground.
Circulating the Fluid
- Start the engine and keep your foot on the brake pedal.
- Move the gear lever slowly through all positions (P → R → N → D → L), pausing for about 5 seconds in each position.
- Return the lever to P and allow the engine to idle.
- Monitor the CVT fluid temperature (target range: 35–45 °C).
- Stop the engine once warmed up.
Checking the Fluid Level
- Raise the vehicle again and remove the drain plug.
- Slowly add about 0.5 liters of CVT fluid.
- If fluid begins to trickle and then drip steadily from the overflow, the level is correct.
- Reinstall the drain plug and torque to 34 Nm with a new washer.
- Lower the vehicle and switch the engine off.
Torque Specifications
- CVT drain plug: 34 Nm (replace sealing washer)
- Overflow tube: 15 Nm

Extra Information & Tips
- Typical capacity: around 3.0 liters for a drain and refill, 7–8 liters for a complete overhaul fill.
- Change CVT fluid every 60,000 km or sooner if driving in hot climates or towing regularly.
- Overfilling or underfilling can cause harsh shifting, overheating, or long-term CVT damage.
- Dispose of old fluid at a recycling center — never pour it down the drain.
