Start the Car With a Dead Key Fob Battery

A dead key-fob battery on the Nissan Qashqai (J12, 2021–present), including the e-Power hybrid, does not leave you stranded. Every third-generation Qashqai uses the NISSAN Intelligent Key with a push-button START/STOP ignition, and the button itself reads the key’s transponder when the coin cell is flat. Start a Qashqai J12 with a dead fob battery

A backup antenna behind the START/STOP button powers the key’s chip through the radio field, so no coin-cell charge is needed to start the car.

1. Sit in the driver’s seat, close the doors, and press the brake pedal fully (on e-Power models press the brake the same way).
2. Hold the fob with the Nissan badge on the back touching the START/STOP button.
3. A chime confirms the chip has been read. Within about 10 seconds, press the button while keeping the brake down.
4. The system powers up and the engine (or e-Power READY mode) starts. Leave it running until you fit a new cell.

Unlock the doors with the mechanical key

A flat fob disables the remote buttons and the keyless walk-up sensors, so use the emergency blade hidden in the Intelligent Key.

1. Slide the catch on the back of the fob and pull the metal blade out.
2. The driver’s door keyhole sits behind a small cap on the handle; remove the cap, insert the blade, and turn to unlock.
3. Open the door. The alarm may chirp until the car recognises the key inside and you start it.

Immobiliser note

The J12 immobiliser authenticates a passive transponder built into the Intelligent Key. That chip is energised by the start button’s field, not the coin cell, so an authorised key is still recognised with a completely dead battery. A flat cell only disables remote locking and proximity entry — it never blocks starting.

Replace the key-fob battery

The third-generation Qashqai Intelligent Key takes a single CR2032 3 V coin cell, fitted positive (+) side up. Check the marking on the old cell to confirm.

1. Slide the mechanical blade out first to release the case latch.
2. Find the release notch on the side of the fob and gently prise the snap-fit shell apart with a flat tool — do not force it.
3. Lift out the old cell and fit the new CR2032 positive side up, holding it by the edges. Close the case, reinsert the blade, and test the buttons.
