When the Intelligent Key on your Nissan Quest (RE52, 2011–2017) only works up close, or a key battery-discharge indicator shows on the display, the coin cell inside is running down. Replacing it takes a couple of minutes and one inexpensive battery.
The Battery You Need
The RE52 Quest Intelligent Key takes a single CR2025 3-volt lithium coin cell (or equivalent). A dashboard Intelligent Key battery-discharge indicator is your cue to change it before it dies completely.
Replacing the Cell
- Slide out the mechanical key from the fob — the release helps you split the case.
- Ease the two halves apart at the seam with a small flat screwdriver wrapped in tape.
- Lift out the old cell, noting which face points up.
- Fit the new CR2025 the same way round, keeping fingers, dust and oil off the cell and contacts.
- Align the two halves and click the case back together, then slide the mechanical key home.
- Press a button, or start the van, to confirm the key is recognised again.
If It Still Will Not Work
Check the cell is the right way up, seated firmly, and the contacts are clean. If a completely flat key stops the Quest recognising it, you can still start the van by touching the key to the push-button ignition switch — see our dead-key-fob start guide — then fit a fresh cell.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which battery does the RE52 Quest key use? A CR2025 lithium coin cell, or an equivalent brand.
Do I have to reprogram the key afterwards? No — swapping the cell does not erase the programming.
What is the key battery-discharge indicator? A dashboard message that appears when the Intelligent Key’s coin cell is low — fit a new CR2025 promptly.
Can I still drive with a dead key? Yes — touch the key to the ignition switch and start with the brake pressed.
