Relearn the Idle Air Volume Without a Scan Tool

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated September 7, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Nissan Titan Mk1 (A60) 2004-2015.

After a battery disconnect, a throttle-body clean or an electronic-throttle repair, the Nissan Titan (A60, 2004–2015) with the 5.6-litre VK56DE V8 can idle roughly or hunt until the ECM relearns its idle settings. You can perform the full relearn yourself with no scan tool — it is a precise sequence of ignition and accelerator-pedal steps.

Before You Start

The relearn only takes if every condition below is met and held throughout — miss one for even a moment and it cancels:

  • Battery voltage above 12.9 V at idle.
  • Engine coolant temperature 70–100 °C (158–212 °F).
  • Transmission in P or N; steering straight; vehicle stopped.
  • All electrical loads off (air conditioning, headlights).
  • Transmission warmed up — drive for about 10 minutes first.

How to Perform the Idle Relearn

The full procedure is three learnings in order: accelerator-pedal released position, throttle-valve closed position, then idle-air-volume. Read it through before you begin and count the timings accurately.

  1. Accelerator-pedal released position: with the pedal fully up, turn the ignition ON and wait at least 2 seconds; turn it OFF and wait at least 10 seconds; turn it ON again for at least 2 seconds; turn it OFF and wait at least 10 seconds.
  2. Throttle-valve closed position: start the engine from cold (coolant below 25 °C/77 °F), warm it to at least 65 °C (149 °F), then turn the ignition OFF and wait at least 10 seconds — you should hear the throttle valve move during that time.
  3. Start the engine and warm it to normal operating temperature, then confirm the conditions above are all met.
  4. Turn the ignition OFF and wait at least 10 seconds.
  5. With the pedal fully released, turn the ignition ON and wait 3 seconds.
  6. Within 5 seconds, fully depress and fully release the accelerator pedal 5 times.
  7. Wait about 7 seconds, then fully depress the pedal and hold it for about 20 seconds until the malfunction indicator lamp stops blinking and stays ON.
  8. Fully release the pedal within 3 seconds of the lamp turning ON.
  9. Start the engine and let it idle for 20 seconds.
  10. Rev the engine two or three times and confirm the idle is steady at about 650 rpm in P or N.

If the Relearn Does Not Take

The most common reasons are a condition that slipped out of range mid-sequence — a load switching on, the coolant cooling below the window, or a timing that was off. Recheck every precondition and repeat the sequence from the start. Persistent rough idle after a clean relearn points to an intake air leak, a dirty throttle body, or a fault that needs codes read.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a scan tool? No — the sequence above is the no-tool method. A scan tool can do the same job faster but is not required.

When do I need to do this? After disconnecting or replacing the battery, cleaning the throttle body, or replacing the electronic throttle actuator or ECM — any time the idle is rough or hunts afterwards.

The MIL came on during the pedal steps — is that a fault? During the idle-air-volume step the lamp is meant to blink and then stay on as a signal — that is part of the procedure, not a fault code.

What idle speed is correct? About 650 rpm (±50) in P or N, with ignition timing around 15° BTDC.
