A rough or hunting idle on the Nissan Xterra (N50, 2005–2015) with the 4.0-litre VQ40DE V6 is common after the battery has been off, the throttle body cleaned, or the electronic throttle serviced. The ECM needs to relearn its idle values, and you can walk it through the whole thing with no scan tool.
Conditions That Must Hold
The learn is fussy — if any of these slips out of range even briefly, it aborts and you start over:
- Battery above 12.9 V at idle.
- Coolant at 70–100 °C (158–212 °F).
- Manual in Neutral with the clutch up, or automatic in P/N.
- Air conditioning, headlights and rear defogger all OFF; steering straight; vehicle still.
- Gearbox warmed — drive about 10 minutes beforehand.
The Full Relearn, Step by Step
It runs as three learns in sequence. Count the timings with a clock — they are exact.
- Accelerator-pedal released position: pedal fully up, ignition ON for at least 2 seconds, OFF for at least 10; ON again for at least 2 seconds, OFF for at least 10.
- Throttle-valve closed position: start the engine cold (coolant under 25 °C/77 °F), warm it past 65 °C (149 °F), then switch off and wait at least 10 seconds — you should hear the throttle valve cycle.
- Restart, warm to full operating temperature, and confirm every condition in the list above.
- Turn the ignition OFF and wait at least 10 seconds.
- Pedal fully up, ignition ON, wait 3 seconds.
- Within 5 seconds, fully press and fully release the accelerator five times.
- Wait 7 seconds, then hold the pedal flat for about 20 seconds until the malfunction lamp stops blinking and stays lit.
- Release the pedal within 3 seconds of the lamp going solid.
- Start the engine, let it idle, and wait 20 seconds.
- Blip the throttle two or three times and check the idle settles near 625 rpm (Neutral for manual, P/N for automatic).
If It Will Not Complete
Nine times out of ten a failed learn is a precondition that drifted — a load switching on, the coolant dropping below the window, or a mistimed step. Re-check the throttle valve is closing fully, look for an intake air leak, then repeat from the top. A V6 that still hunts after a clean learn usually has a vacuum leak or a throttle body that needs a proper clean.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a scan tool needed? No — the sequence above is the no-tool method for the VQ40DE.
When should I do this? After a battery disconnect or replacement, a throttle-body clean, or replacing the throttle actuator or ECM — whenever the idle is unhappy afterwards.
The warning lamp lit during the pedal steps — is that bad? No. It is meant to blink then hold steady as a cue during the idle-air-volume step; it is signalling, not logging a fault.
What is the target idle? About 625 rpm (±50), with ignition timing around 15° BTDC.
