The Porsche 911 (992, 2019–Present) uses a fully electronic parking brake, but its layout is different from a typical family hatchback. Like all current Porsche sports cars the 992 runs fixed, opposed-piston calipers on the rear axle and a separate drum-in-hat parking brake — small shoes that clamp inside the rotor’s top hat, driven by two electric actuators. That means a rear-pad change and the EPB are two different jobs, and you need to understand which one needs service mode.
What service mode is and why the 992 is different
On the 992 the rear service-brake pistons are not held by the parking-brake motors — the EPB acts on internal shoes, not the caliper pistons. So for a pad-only change you usually do not need to put the EPB into service mode at all: you simply press the opposed pistons straight back into the fixed caliper. Service (installation) mode is what you need when you have to pull the rear rotor — for a disc change or to renew the parking-brake shoes — because the EPB actuator has to be wound clear of the hat first. There is no owner button sequence for this; it is a PIWIS / scan-tool job.
Retracting the rear brakes on the 992
Park on level ground, chock the fronts and connect a battery charger — the EPB module is voltage-sensitive.
- Pad-only change. Release the EPB, lift the car, remove the rear wheels. The fixed caliper’s opposed pistons push straight back — press them in evenly with a flat pad spreader. They do not screw in. Fit the new pads.
- Rotor or shoe change (needs service mode). Plug in PIWIS, or a capable consumer tool (iCarsoft POR series, Foxwell NT530/NT809, Autel), open the parking-brake module and select Move to installation / service position. The actuators wind the shoes in so the rotor pulls off.
Never force the EPB pistons or actuator back by hand
Never drive the parking-brake actuator back mechanically while it is live, and never hammer or clamp the drum shoes to make a rotor come off. Retract the EPB electronically in service mode only. If the rotor will not release, the EPB is still applied — stop and run the routine rather than forcing it. The fixed-caliper service pistons are the only thing you push by hand, and only straight in. Forcing the actuator strips its gearset and the part is not cheap.
Exit, calibration and bed-in
After shoe or rotor work, use the tool to bring the EPB out of installation position, then run the parking-brake adjustment / grind-in and calibration so the shoe air gap is correct — brake temperature must be below 50 °C for this. If the 992 has PCCB ceramic brakes, no grind-in of the service pads is required, but be extra careful: ceramic discs chip and the calipers are costly. Finish by bedding the service pads in with several firm slowdowns from about 50 mph, cooling between them, and confirm the parking brake holds on a slope.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a scan tool just to change rear pads on a 992? Usually no — the fixed-caliper pistons push straight back, so a pad-only swap needs no service mode. You need the tool only to pull the rotor or service the parking-brake shoes.
The pistons won’t screw in — what’s wrong? Nothing. The 992 uses opposed fixed calipers; the pistons press straight in. They never rotate like a single-piston rear caliper.
Is anything different with PCCB ceramic brakes? Yes — the parking-brake shoes and discs still calibrate, but the ceramic service pads do not need a grind-in, and ceramic discs are fragile, so handle them with care.
My EPB got stuck in service position — how do I clear it? Only with a tool. Starting the car and pressing the switch will not bring it out; reconnect PIWIS or a capable scanner and command it out of installation position.
Why did the routine abort? Almost always low 12 V supply. Keep a charger on the battery and retry.
