Disconnecting the 12 V battery on your Porsche Macan (2014–present) — the 95B — is a job most owners can handle at home with basic tools. The usual reasons are fitting a new battery, laying the car up on a trickle charger over winter, or safely isolating the electrics before working near the airbags. Provided you work in the right order, the Macan powers back up cleanly and relearns the few comfort settings it drops, so this is a routine task rather than something to be wary of.

Where the 12 V Battery Is
On the 95B the 12 V battery sits in the engine compartment, under a cover. Lift the cover and you will find the two terminals: the negative (−) post takes the black earth lead, and the positive (+) post takes the red lead, normally shielded by a red plastic flap. Confirm which post is which before you begin — the safe order of work depends on it. Note your radio presets down before you disconnect, as they will be lost.
Before You Begin
- Switch the ignition fully off and make sure the Macan is not in its READY state.
- Keep every keyless transmitter well away from the car, outside range, so it cannot wake and re-power the electrics.
- Close the doors and tailgate, and switch off the lights, climate and accessories so nothing is drawing current.
- Note your radio presets and, if the car uses one, your audio security code.
- Allow a couple of minutes for the control modules to power down before you loosen a terminal.
- Have the right spanner to hand, and wear gloves and eye protection.
Disconnecting
- Switch the ignition off and keep keyless transmitters well away from the car so it cannot wake up.
- Slacken the clamp and disconnect the negative (−) terminal first, then move the earth lead clear so it cannot fall back onto the post.
- Now slacken and lift off the positive (+) lead.
- If you are working near the airbags or seat-belt pretensioners, insulate the earth cable and wait about a minute before starting that work.
Reconnecting
- Refit the positive (+) lead first and tighten its clamp.
- Refit the negative (−) earth lead last and tighten it.
- Check both clamps are secure — a loose terminal leads to flickering electrics and phantom warnings — then close the cover.
What You’ll Need to Reset Afterwards
Once power is restored the Macan relearns a small list of items:
- Clock and radio presets — re-enter them, plus the audio code if prompted.
- Power windows and sunroof — the one-touch and anti-pinch function usually needs re-initialising by holding each switch at its fully up and fully down limits.
- Air suspension, if fitted, re-levels itself, and the steering-angle and assistance systems settle over a short drive.
- Seat and mirror memory may need re-storing.
- A new battery should be a like-for-like AGM of the correct spec; a straight swap runs fine, but registering it to the car’s energy manager needs Porsche equipment.
If a Warning Light Stays On or the Car Feels Off
- Check both clamps are tight and clean — a poor connection is the most common cause of odd behaviour.
- Let the car relearn over a gentle drive; many lights clear once the assistance systems recalibrate and the suspension re-levels.
- Re-do the window and sunroof re-initialisation if one-touch has stopped working.
- If a light stays on, rule out a tired or flat battery and read any stored code — look it up on autodtcs.com.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the 12 V battery on a Porsche Macan?
In the engine compartment, under a cover. Lift the cover to reach the negative and positive terminals. Identify the black earth (−) and red positive (+) leads before you start so you disconnect in the correct order.
Which terminal do I disconnect first?
Always the negative (−) terminal first, and reconnect it last. On reconnection the positive (+) goes back on first, then the negative. This keeps the risk of a short against the body to a minimum.
What needs resetting after disconnecting?
Re-enter the clock and radio presets, re-initialise the one-touch windows and sunroof, and let the air suspension re-level and the steering-angle and assistance systems relearn on a short drive. Seat and mirror memory may also need re-storing.
Do I need to code a new battery?
A like-for-like AGM swap will start and run the Macan normally. Registering the new battery to the energy manager, so charging is managed correctly, needs Porsche diagnostic equipment — sensible to have done at a service, but not needed to get the car running.
Will disconnecting the battery reset the service light?
No. The service reminder is stored separately and is not cleared by pulling the battery — that needs the proper service-reset procedure. Disconnecting may clear some transient fault codes, but any real fault will log again.
Can I jump-start it instead?
If you only need to recover a flat battery, a careful jump-start avoids the disconnect altogether. Disconnecting is for renewing the battery, storage on a charger, or isolating the electrics for work near the airbags.
If a warning light stays on after reconnecting, read the stored code and look it up on autodtcs.com.
