Home/Porsche/Taycan/Mk1 (Y1A) 2020-Present/Disconnect and Reconnect the 12V Battery

Disconnect and Reconnect the 12V Battery

These instructions apply to the Porsche Taycan Mk1 (Y1A) 2020-Present. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 12, 2026

Disconnecting the 12 V battery on your Porsche Taycan (2020–present) — for a new battery, storage, or work near the airbags — is straightforward, but as a full EV there are two important points: where the 12 V battery lives, and the high-voltage system you must leave alone.

Two Separate Systems

  • 12 V battery — in the front luggage compartment (frunk), under the floor trim. This is the one you disconnect and replace, exactly like a normal car battery.
  • High-voltage traction battery — under the floor. Never touch the orange high-voltage cabling; it is not owner-serviceable. All the jobs below use only the 12 V.

Disconnecting Safely

  1. Switch the car off and keep keyless transmitters well away (outside range).
  2. Lift the front-compartment floor trim, then disconnect the negative (−) earth cable first, then the positive.
  3. Working near airbags or pretensioners? Insulate the earth cable and wait at least 10 minutes before such work.

Reconnecting and Re-initialising

Reconnect positive first, then negative. The Taycan then relearns:

  • Tyre-pressure monitoring re-initialises (drive to confirm).
  • Power windows — one-touch needs re-initialising (see our Taycan window-reset guide).
  • Re-enter the clock and presets.

If Something Isn’t Right Afterwards

  • Warning lights often clear after a short drive.
  • A persistent light stores a code — look it up on autodtcs.com.
  • Fit a like-for-like AGM battery; registering it to the energy manager needs Porsche equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the 12 V battery on a Porsche Taycan?

In the front luggage compartment (frunk), under the floor trim. The high-voltage battery is separate — never touch its orange cabling.

Is it safe to disconnect the 12 V on an EV?

Yes — the 12 V is separate from the high-voltage system. Just don’t touch the orange HV cabling.

Which terminal first?

Negative (−) earth off first, reconnect it last; wait at least 10 minutes before airbag work.

Do I need to code the new battery?

A like-for-like swap works; registering it to the energy manager needs Porsche diagnostic equipment.

If a warning light stays on after reconnecting, look up the code on autodtcs.com.
