Disconnecting the 12 V battery on your Rover 25 (R3, 1999–2005) is a job most owners can do on the driveway in a few minutes — whether you are fitting a new battery, laying the car up for winter, working safely near the airbags, or clearing an electrical fault by cutting the power. The procedure is the same in every case, and on a car of this era the main thing to plan for is the radio security code, because the original head unit locks itself once it loses power.

What You’ll Need / Before You Start

None of this needs special tools, but a little preparation saves a lot of frustration:

  • A 10 mm spanner for the terminal clamps and a 13 mm socket with a short extension for the base hold-down clamp.
  • Your radio code — write it down first. It is usually on a card in the service pack or stamped on the head unit; otherwise a Rover/MG specialist can retrieve it from the serial number.
  • A note of your clock setting and radio presets.
  • Eye protection, and remove rings and watches — a slipped spanner across a live terminal throws sparks.
  • Optional but recommended — a 12 V memory saver. This small device feeds a trickle of power while the battery is off, so the radio code, clock and stored settings survive. On the Rover 25 the lighter socket is only live with the ignition on, so a type that clips directly to the battery cables is the safer choice. Without one, just note everything down and re-enter it afterwards.

Park on level ground, apply the handbrake, switch off the ignition, lights and fan, and shut the doors and boot so interior lamps do not drain the battery while you work.

Where the Battery Is

The 12 V battery sits in the engine compartment, in the usual front corner of the bay. It is held down by a clamp gripping the bottom lip of the battery, secured by one bolt you reach with a 13 mm socket and short extension; once that is out, the battery lifts straight up. If you are only disconnecting (not removing) it, leave the clamp in place and just free the terminals. Note your radio security code and presets first — the standard Rover head unit needs the code re-entered after any power cut.

Disconnecting Safely — Negative First

  1. Switch everything off and remove the key from the ignition.
  2. Identify the terminals. The negative (−) is the earth lead, usually black or marked with a minus; the positive (+) normally wears a red cover.
  3. Disconnect the negative (−) terminal first. Slacken the clamp nut with the 10 mm spanner, ease the connector off the post and tuck the cable aside so it cannot spring back. Removing the earth first means that if your spanner touches bodywork while you undo the positive, nothing can short.
  4. Now disconnect the positive (+) terminal the same way.
  5. Working near airbags, the steering column or seat-belt pretensioners? Wait a few minutes after disconnecting before you go near them, so any stored charge in the airbag circuit has fully bled away.
  6. To remove the battery, undo the 13 mm base clamp bolt and lift it out, keeping it upright.

What Battery Does It Take?

Petrol Rover 25s are normally fitted with a type 063 battery; the larger type 075 also fits the tray, and the hold-down has a second bolt hole for the longer 075 case so either size clamps securely. Check the size code, capacity and cold-cranking rating on your existing battery’s label and buy like-for-like — the physical case size matters as much as the electrical rating, because an undersized case will not sit properly under the clamp. The 25 predates stop-start, so it uses a conventional flooded lead-acid battery; there is no need for an EFB or AGM type, and a same-spec replacement needs no electronic coding on this car.

Reconnecting — Positive First, Negative Last

Reconnect in the reverse order to make the earth the last live connection:

  1. If you removed the battery, set it back in the tray and refit the 13 mm base clamp, snug but not crushing.
  2. Connect the positive (+) terminal first. Push the connector fully onto the post and tighten the clamp nut so it cannot rock.
  3. Connect the negative (−) terminal last. A small spark as it touches is normal as the electronics power up. Tighten it down.
  4. Check both terminals are firm — a loose earth is a classic cause of intermittent electrical gremlins on these cars.

What to Re-initialise After Reconnecting

The Rover 25 is electronically simple, so there is no engine-management relearn to worry about. After reconnecting, just restore the settings the power loss wiped:

  • Radio security code — the big one on a pre-2010 car. The standard head unit shows a code prompt and will not play until you key in the correct four-digit code from your card. If lost, a Rover/MG specialist can recover it from the unit’s serial number.
  • Clock and date — reset the time; it will have reverted.
  • Radio presets — your stored stations are usually gone and need re-tuning.
  • Electric windows — if a one-touch (auto) window stops working after the disconnect, re-teach it: hold the switch fully up until closed and keep holding a couple of seconds at the top, then repeat fully down. This re-establishes the end stops.
  • Warning lights — any lamps that come on at first should settle after a short drive.

If Something Goes Wrong

  • Radio shows “CODE” or stays locked. This is expected after a power cut — enter your security code. Too many wrong attempts can lock the unit for a waiting period, so be sure of the digits before you try.
  • Car won’t start, or only clicks. Re-check both terminals are tight and on the right posts. A connector that looks seated but is loose will not pass enough current to crank.
  • A warning light won’t go out after a drive. A persistent lamp means a fault code is stored — read it with a basic OBD scanner before changing parts.
  • Window won’t auto-close. Repeat the up/down hold procedure above to re-teach the one-touch function.
  • The alarm sounds on reconnection. Unlock the car with the remote/key to set the alarm to a known state.
