If the touchscreen in your Škoda Fabia (Mk3, NJ, 2015–2023) has frozen, gone black, or stopped responding to taps, you can force a reboot yourself in under a minute — no tools, no garage.
Which system is in your Fabia NJ
The third-generation Fabia ran the VW Group MIB2 infotainment. By trim you have Swing, Bolero, or the navigation-equipped Amundsen — the Fabia never offered the big Columbus unit. All three keep a physical volume/power knob beside the screen, and all three reboot the same way. A black screen, a frozen menu, or a unit stuck on the ŠKODA splash logo is almost always a software lock-up rather than a failed display.
Soft reset (reboot) the screen
Do this parked, ignition on, so the unit stays powered.
- Find the round volume/power knob to the left of the screen — the one you press to switch the audio on and off.
- Press and hold it. Keep holding past the point where the audio mutes.
- After about 10–15 seconds the screen goes black and the ŠKODA logo appears.
- Release the knob and wait 30–60 seconds for the home screen to reload. Touch and audio should return.
Safe — no data loss
The knob-hold reboot is the equivalent of restarting a phone. It does not erase radio presets, navigation favourites, paired phones, or settings. The unit simply reloads its software, so you can do it as often as you need.
If it stays frozen
- Hold longer. If 15 seconds did nothing, try again and hold the knob for up to 30 seconds.
- Let it sleep. Switch the ignition off, lock the car with the key, and walk away for about five minutes so the electronics power down; then unlock and restart.
- Check for a software update. The Fabia’s Bolero/Amundsen had a known habit of freezing on the splash screen on older firmware; a USB update from Škoda’s update portal or a dealer can refresh it.
- Pull the fuse (last resort). If nothing else works, removing the infotainment fuse for about 10 seconds force-cuts power. Check the fuse chart in your handbook first.
Factory reset (erases data)
A factory reset is separate from the reboot and only worth doing if you are selling the car or chasing a deep, persistent glitch. On the NJ it lives under Menu → Settings (or System) → Factory settings. It erases presets, paired phones, and saved destinations, so only do it deliberately.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the reset knob on the Fabia Mk3?
It is the round volume knob beside the screen — the same control you turn for volume and press to switch the audio off. Hold it in to reboot.
Will I lose my saved radio stations?
No. The knob-hold reboot keeps presets, navigation favourites, and paired phones. Only a deliberate factory reset from the menu clears them.
My Bolero is frozen on the ŠKODA logo — how do I fix it?
That splash-screen freeze is a common MIB2 software hang. Hold the volume knob for 15 seconds; if it loops again, let the car sleep for five minutes and reboot once more. A firmware update cures the recurring case.
Is it safe to drive with the screen frozen?
Yes. The infotainment unit is independent of the engine and driving systems — you only lose audio, Bluetooth, and navigation. Reboot when you are safely parked.
Does the Fabia have a Columbus unit to reset?
No. The Fabia Mk3 was only offered with Swing, Bolero, and Amundsen. Whichever you have, the volume-knob hold reboots it.
If a warning light or fault message stays on the dash after the reboot, the car may have stored a diagnostic trouble code — you can look it up on autodtcs.com.
