Start the Car With a Dead Key Fob Battery

These instructions apply to the SsangYong Musso Mk2 (Q200) 2018-2023. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 12, 2026

The SsangYong Musso (Q200, 2018–2023) shares its Smart Key platform with the Rexton: keyless entry and a push-button start run by the Smart Key Module. When the coin cell dies the long-range radio drops and the dash flags the key as undetected, but the truck still reads the chip up close — so a flat fob never strands you. Here is the fallback.

Start the Truck With a Dead Smart Key

The transponder in the Musso fob is passive; an antenna behind the START/STOP button powers and reads it from a centimetre away, so a flat coin cell does not block a start:

  1. Get in first (mechanical-key steps below) and sit in the driver’s seat, door shut.
  2. Press the brake pedal fully and hold it.
  3. Hold the Smart Key flat against the START/STOP button, badge face to the button.
  4. With the brake down, press START. The Musso cranks and starts.

If nothing happens, square the fob on the button or flip it to the other face; the read coil reaches only a centimetre or two.

Unlock With the Emergency Key

A dead fob will not unlock by radio, so use the blade inside it.

  1. Slide the catch on the Smart Key and pull the mechanical blade out.
  2. At the driver’s door, lever off the cover on the handle to reach the lock cylinder.
  3. Insert and turn to unlock. The alarm may sound until the truck is started.

About the Immobiliser

The Musso’s Smart Key Module handles the immobiliser, the same unit family as the Rexton. Holding the fob to the start button is SsangYong’s designed low-battery fallback — the close-range immobiliser link is independent of the hands-free radio, so it still authorises a start on a flat cell. A crank-but-no-run or a key warning that survives a fresh cell points at the key or SKM, not the coin cell.

Replace the Coin Cell

The Musso Smart Key uses a single 3V lithium CR2032.

  1. Pull the mechanical blade out to expose the case seam.
  2. Twist a coin or small flat screwdriver in the slot to part the halves.
  3. Lift the old CR2032 out and fit the new one positive (+) side the same way, by the rim.
  4. Click the case shut and test lock/unlock at the truck.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I start the Musso if the smart key is dead? Hold the fob against the START/STOP button with the brake pressed, then push START.

Which battery does the Musso smart key take? A CR2032 3V lithium coin cell.

Is the key the same as the Rexton? The Musso and Rexton share the Smart Key platform, so the fallback method and battery are the same; key blades are cut individually.

Where is the door keyhole? Behind a cover on the driver’s door handle; pop the cover with the emergency blade.

Key still not detected with a new cell — why? Test the 12V battery first; a weak main battery can mimic a key fault. If it persists, the key or SKM needs checking.

If a warning light stayed on after you drove off, you can decode the exact fault on our sister site autodtcs.com to check whether it relates to the smart-key system.
