If the remote on your Suzuki SX4 S-Cross Mk1 (JY, 2013–2021) has become weak — you have to stand close to lock or unlock, or a low-battery warning has appeared — the fob’s coin cell needs replacing. Depending on trim the S-Cross came with a keyless smart key (CR2032) or a flip key (CR1616). This guide covers both. It takes a couple of minutes with a small screwdriver.
Which Key Do You Have?
- Type 1 — keyless smart key: push-button start cars; has a pull-out emergency blade. Takes a CR2032.
- Type 2 — flip/blade key: held together by a small screw. Takes a CR1616.
If you’re unsure, match the cell you remove.
How to Replace the S-Cross Key Battery
- Remove the screw in the key body (or, on the smart key, slide out the emergency key blade first).
- Use a small screwdriver to remove the button-cell cover and lift the transmitter out of its holder.
- Separate the cases and remove the old cell, noting which way up it sits.
- Fit the new cell with the positive (+) side facing down (as the original sat — check yours before fitting).
- Refit the transmitter, the cover and the screw (or reassemble the smart key and refit the blade).
- Check the remote locks and unlocks the car.
Does It Need Programming?
No — replacing the coin cell does not affect the fob’s pairing, so the key keeps working immediately. Programming a brand-new or additional key (the S-Cross allows up to 4) needs Suzuki’s diagnostic equipment at a dealer or auto locksmith — note that adding keys can erase older codes if the limit is exceeded.

Will the car still start if the smart-key battery dies?
Yes. Hold the fob against the start button (Suzuki marks the spot) to start using the backup transponder. The emergency blade in the fob unlocks the door.

On these Suzuki fobs the cell usually sits positive side down against the contact — but always copy how the old one sat.
My remote still won’t work with a fresh cell — now what?
Re-open it and check the cell orientation and that the contacts are clean. If it’s still dead, the fob may have an internal fault and need replacing and programming by a dealer or locksmith.
