Every Tesla door opens electrically. If your Tesla Model 3 (2017–2024) loses 12 V power, the button at the top of the interior handle won’t work — but the front doors have a mechanical release so you can still get out. It is worth knowing before you ever need it.
How to open a front door with no power
- Find the manual release — a small lever located in front of the window switches on the front door.
- Pull the lever up. The door unlatches and you can push it open.
Important cautions
- Front doors only. The rear doors have no manual release — only the front doors do, so rear occupants exit through a front door.
- Do not use it while the car is moving. The manual release is for a powerless, stationary car.
- The window will not drop first. With power, the glass lowers slightly as the door opens; the manual release skips that, so open gently to avoid scuffing the window or trim.
- Whenever the car has power, use the normal button at the top of the interior door handle.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the manual door release on a Tesla Model 3?
On each front door, a lever just in front of the window switches. Pull it up to open the door without power.
Do the rear doors have a manual release?
No — only the front doors. If the car has no power, rear passengers climb out through a front door.
Why shouldn’t I use the manual release normally?
It bypasses the automatic window-drop, which can scuff the glass or trim, and it is not meant for use while driving. Use the normal door button whenever the car has power.
