These instructions apply to the Tesla Model Y (2020-2024).

The Tesla Model Y (2020–2024) uses two stacked cabin air filters behind the passenger footwell — not one behind the glovebox like most cars. A clogged pair is the usual cause of weak airflow or a musty smell, and swapping them is a 15-minute owner job.
How to replace the Model Y cabin air filters
- Slide the front passenger seat fully back for room, and turn the climate control off.
- Using a plastic trim tool, release the push clips along the passenger footwell side cover and lower it gently — it has a light and speaker connector attached, so unclip those.
- On the side of the centre console you’ll see the filter cover, held by a single screw (T20 Torx). Remove it to expose the two filters.
- Pull the upper then the lower filter out (they slide up and out).
- Fit the two new filters with the airflow arrows pointing towards the rear of the car, then refit the cover and footwell panel.
Buy filters in pairs — the Model Y always takes two. Replace them every couple of years, sooner in dusty areas or if a smell develops; an evaporator treatment at the same time helps clear odours.
Frequently asked questions
How many cabin filters does a Model Y have?
Two, stacked together behind the passenger footwell. Always buy and fit them as a pair.
Which way do the filters go in?
Airflow arrows point towards the rear of the car (towards the passenger seat). Fitting them backwards cuts airflow.
Why does my Model Y smell musty?
Clogged or damp cabin filters are the common cause — replace them and treat the evaporator.
