Home/Toyota/Hilux/Mk8 (AN120/AN130) 2016-2024/Replace the Cabin Air Filter

Replace the Cabin Air Filter

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 4, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Toyota Hilux Mk8 (AN120/AN130) 2016-2024.

A clogged cabin (pollen) filter is the usual reason for weak airflow and musty smells from the Hilux vents. It sits behind the glovebox and swaps out in a few minutes with no tools — just drop the glovebox and slide the old filter out.

Toyota recommends changing it with each service, and sooner if you drive in dusty areas or heavy traffic.

Replacing the cabin air filter

  1. Switch the ignition off.
  2. Open the glovebox, then turn the claws/stops on each side as shown so the box can drop fully down.
  3. Pull the claws out, release the damper arm (if fitted) on the side, and lower the glovebox out of the way.
  4. Remove the filter cover, then slide out the old cabin filter.
  5. Fit the new filter with the “UP” arrows pointing up, refit the cover, and swing the glovebox back into place.

Fitting the filter upside-down restricts airflow, so check the UP marks before refitting. Never run the air conditioning without a filter installed — dust will foul the evaporator.

FAQ

How often should I change it? At each service as a rule, or every 12–15,000 miles; more often in dusty or high-pollen conditions.

Airflow is still weak after changing it. Check the blower and that the recirculation flap is working; a badly clogged old filter can also hint the intake grille under the windscreen is blocked with leaves.
