These instructions apply to the Toyota Hilux Mk8 (AN120/AN130) 2016-2024.

The automatic Hilux uses the AC60F six-speed gearbox, which is a sealed “fill-for-life” unit with no dipstick. You check and set the level through an overflow plug underneath — and crucially, only within a narrow fluid-temperature window, which is why it is really a workshop check rather than a quick driveway job.
Fluid and capacity
- Fluid type: Toyota Genuine ATF WS (no substitutes)
- Total capacity: approx. 9.5 litres (diesel); a drain-and-refill takes less
How the overflow level check works
- Park the truck dead level on a lift or ramps (within about 1° front-to-rear), engine off.
- Bring the ATF to the specified temperature window — this is read with a scan tool on the ATF temperature data, because there is no dipstick and the level is temperature-sensitive.
- With the engine idling and the fluid in range, remove the overflow plug (5 mm hex) from the pan.
- If a steady trickle runs out, the level is correct. If nothing comes out, fluid is added through the refill plug until it just overflows, then the plug is refitted.
- Torque the drain plug to 20 N·m and the overflow/refill plugs to spec.
Because getting the temperature window right needs a scan tool reading the transmission data, most owners leave the level check and any top-up to a workshop. Overfilling or underfilling a WS transmission causes harsh shifts and overheating, so guessing is not worth the risk.
FAQ
Where is the dipstick? There isn’t one — the AC60F is sealed. The only check is the overflow-plug method above.
Does ATF ever need changing? Toyota calls it fill-for-life, but many owners change it (drain and refill) around 60,000–100,000 km for heavy or towing use, using ATF WS only.
If a transmission fault code (for example a P07xx) is stored, look it up on autodtcs.com.
