These instructions apply to the Toyota Hilux Mk8 (AN120/AN130) 2016-2024.

A flat 12 V battery is the most common reason a Hilux will not start. With jump leads and a second 12 V vehicle you can be moving again in a few minutes — the only catch is the last clamp goes to a bare metal earth point, not the dead battery’s negative post.
Jump-starting the Hilux
- Park the donor vehicle close (not touching), switch both engines off and open both hoods. The Hilux battery is in the engine bay.
- Clamp one end of the red (+) lead to the positive terminal on the Hilux.
- Clamp the other end of the red lead to the positive terminal on the donor vehicle.
- Clamp one end of the black (−) lead to the donor’s negative terminal.
- Clamp the final black end to a solid, unpainted metal point on the Hilux engine, well away from the battery and any moving parts — not the battery’s negative post.
- Start the donor engine, let it run a minute, then start the Hilux. Once it fires, remove the leads in the exact reverse order.
Earthing the last clamp to bare metal rather than the battery keeps any spark away from the hydrogen gas a charging battery gives off. After a successful jump, drive for a while to recharge, and have the battery and charging system checked.
FAQ
Can I push-start an automatic Hilux? No — automatics cannot be push-started. Jump leads or a jump pack are the only options.
After the jump some systems feel off. Disconnecting or deeply draining the battery clears ECU learned values; drive straight for a few seconds so the stability and steering systems relearn, and re-initialize the windows if the one-touch stops working.
Why did the battery go flat? Short trips, lights left on, or an aging battery. If it keeps happening, test for a parasitic drain.
If a warning light stays on after a jump-start, read the code and look it up on autodtcs.com.
