Reset the Tyre Pressure Monitor (TPMS)

These instructions apply to the Vauxhall Astra Mk6 (J/P10) 2010-2018. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 4, 2026

When the tyre-pressure warning light shows on your Vauxhall Astra J (Mk6, 2010–2018) — the Opel Astra J in the rest of Europe — it usually just means the system needs to relearn your current pressures after a check, top-up or wheel change. How you reset it depends on which system your Astra has. This guide covers both.

Two Systems on the Astra J

The Astra J was fitted with one of two tyre-pressure systems:

  • Indirect — uses the ABS wheel-speed sensors, with nothing inside the wheel. It relearns automatically as you drive after the pressures are corrected.
  • Direct — valve-mounted sensors, with the reset done through the Driver Information Centre (DIC) menu using the SET/CLR button.

If your car shows individual tyre pressures on the display, it has the direct system; if it only gives a general warning, it is indirect.

When to Reset

  • After checking or adjusting the tyre pressures (including seasonal changes).
  • After changing one or more wheels or tyres.
  • After rotating the wheels front-to-back.

Set Your Pressures First

The system learns from whatever is in the tyres, so they must be correct first. Set all four (cold) to the figures on the placard in the driver’s door aperture or behind the fuel flap, using the laden column for a full load. Never reset with a tyre already low.

Method 1 — Indirect System (Drive to Relearn)

  1. Set all four cold pressures to the placard figures.
  2. Switch on and drive the car for about 9 minutes.
  3. Keep the speed above roughly 40 km/h (25 mph) for part of the drive.
  4. The system relearns the new baseline and the warning light goes out.

Method 2 — Direct System (DIC Menu)

  1. Set the correct cold pressures and switch the ignition on (position II).
  2. Press the MENU button (on the indicator stalk or dash) and scroll to the Vehicle information menu.
  3. Select “Tyre pressure”.
  4. Press and hold the “SET/CLR” button until a confirmation message appears, then press it again to store.
  5. The pressures are stored as the new reference.

After either method, a short drive lets the system settle and confirm.

Light Won’t Go Out? Work Through This

  • A tyre is genuinely low: the system is doing its job — find and fix the leak, re-inflate, then reset.
  • Indirect car not driven long enough: the relearn needs about 9 minutes including time above 40 km/h.
  • Direct car not stored: repeat the MENU / SET-CLR steps and confirm.
  • Flashing (not steady) light on a direct car: a flashing TPMS light points to a sensor fault rather than a low tyre — the car may store a code you can look up on autodtcs.com.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know which system my Astra J has?

If the display shows individual tyre pressures, it is the direct system (reset via the DIC menu). If it only gives a general low-pressure warning, it is indirect (relearns by driving).

Where is the SET/CLR button?

It is the button used to acknowledge Driver Information Centre messages — usually on the indicator stalk or the dash near the cluster.

Why does the light come back a few days later?

Either a tyre is slowly losing air, or it was a little low when you reset. Re-check all four cold pressures and reset again.

Is this the same on the Opel Astra J?

Yes — the Vauxhall and Opel Astra J are the same car, so the procedure is identical.

After tyre or seasonal-wheel work it is worth confirming the service reminder is clear — see our Astra J service indicator reset guide.
