Replace the Key Fob Battery

These instructions apply to the Volkswagen T-Cross Mk1 (C11) 2019-Present. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 6, 2026

Short range or a “key battery low” note on your Volkswagen T-Cross (C11, 2019–present) almost always means a tired coin cell. The T-Cross key uses one CR2032 and you can swap it in a couple of minutes.

What You Need

One CR2032 3 V coin cell — the standard VW key battery, sold everywhere.

Swapping the Cell

  1. Slide out the metal key blade using the release catch.
  2. Slide off the rear cover (or split the case at the blade slot).
  3. Take out the old CR2032, noting which way it faces.
  4. Drop the new one in the same orientation; keep fingers off the flat faces.
  5. Refit the cover and the blade.

Test the lock and unlock from a few paces.

If It’s Still Dead

  • You can still start it — hold the key to the start button as you press; the car reads the chip directly.
  • Lock by hand with the blade in the driver’s door (behind a small cap).
