These instructions apply to the Volvo XC60 Mk2 (246) 2018-present.

After a service the maintenance reminder on your Volvo XC60 (246, 2018–present) stays on until you clear it. It’s done with the left steering-wheel ‘–’ (reduce cruise-speed) button — no dealer tool needed. The message is the car telling you the next scheduled service has fallen due; it is a maintenance prompt, not a fault, and clearing it simply restarts the count toward the next interval.

What the Service Message Means

On the second-generation XC60 the reminder shows in the driver display as a spanner symbol or a “Time for regular service” style message at start-up. It is produced by the car’s service scheduler, which counts down toward the next due point using a blend of elapsed time and distance driven. Reaching that point triggers the prompt. It is not a live measure of oil quality and it does not report a defect — it simply flags that the maintenance interval has run its course. Because this same scheduler is what the car uses to decide when the next service is due, it has to be reset once the work is done so the next countdown begins from the right place.

Do not confuse the service reminder with the coloured warning lamps. Amber and red symbols — engine, brake, charging, airbag and so on — signal a real condition and are not affected by the reset below. If one of those is lit, clearing the service reminder will not turn it off, and the underlying cause needs looking at.

Before You Start

Only reset once the work is genuinely done — the reminder tracks when the next service is due, so clearing it before the oil, filter and any other scheduled items are actually changed leaves the car counting from a false baseline. Park on level ground with the handbrake applied and make sure you can reach the instrument cluster without stretching. No tools, scanners or apps are required — everything happens from the driver’s seat using the car’s own controls.

The XC60 sequence has you switch the ignition on first and then start the engine partway through, so carry it out somewhere well ventilated.

Resetting the Reminder

  1. Press the start/stop button to switch the ignition on — do not press the brake pedal (so the engine doesn’t start yet).
  2. Press and hold the – (reduce cruise-speed) button on the left steering-wheel keypad (the lower button below the cruise-control symbol) — not a button on the cluster.
  3. Start the engine while keeping the button held.
  4. After about 10 seconds the cluster display flashes; keep holding a further 4 seconds.
  5. Release the button — a confirmation message appears.

The flash is the point most people get caught out by: it is the signal that the reset is being accepted, not that it is complete, so keep the button held for those extra few seconds beyond it before letting go.

If It Won’t Clear

  • Hold through the flash — release too early and it won’t confirm.
  • Don’t touch the brake when first switching on, or the start sequence differs.
  • Make sure the ignition was on first. If pressing the steering-wheel button does nothing, the cluster may not have been awake — press start/stop once without the brake, watch the display come to life, then hold the steering-wheel button.
  • Start over cleanly. If an attempt fails, switch everything off, pause a few seconds, and run the whole sequence again from step one rather than adding presses to a half-finished try.
  • Rule out a warning lamp. The reset only touches the service reminder; a separate coloured warning will remain lit no matter how many times you repeat it.

What to Expect After Resetting

As soon as the confirmation message appears and you release the button, the spanner reminder clears and the service scheduler starts counting toward the next due point. There is no extra save step and nothing to unplug — the new baseline is stored the moment the reset confirms. If the message stays away the next time you start the car, it has held correctly.

How Often to Reset It

Reset the reminder after every scheduled service, once the work is actually finished. Volvo sets the XC60 service interval by a mix of time and distance, and the precise figure can differ by model year, engine and market, so instead of quoting a single mileage here, follow the interval printed in your car’s service plan or owner’s handbook. The rule of thumb is unchanged: complete the work first, then clear the reminder so the next countdown is accurate.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I reset the service light on a Volvo XC60?

Ignition on without the brake, hold the left steering-wheel ‘–’ (reduce cruise-speed) button, start the engine, keep holding ~10 s until the display flashes, then 4 s more, and release.

Do I need a Volvo diagnostic tool?

No — the steering-wheel button resets the reminder.

Why is it still showing?

You likely released before the confirmation. Repeat, holding through the flash and a few seconds beyond it.

Does this clear a warning light?

No — only the service reminder, not a fault light.

Do I need to start the engine to reset it?

Yes — the XC60 sequence has you switch the ignition on, hold the steering-wheel button, then start the engine while still holding, so the engine does run during this reset.

Will resetting the reminder affect my service history?

No — it only restarts the car’s internal countdown to the next service. Your stamped or digital service record is stored separately and is not touched.

If a warning symbol (not the service reminder) is lit, look the code up on autodtcs.com. Changing the battery too? See our XC60 battery guide.
