Reset the Tyre Pressure Monitor (TPMS)

These instructions apply to the Volkswagen Golf Mk7 (5G) 2012-2020. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 4, 2026

When the tyre-pressure warning light comes on in your Volkswagen Golf Mk7 (5G/BE/BA/BV/BQ, 2012–2020), it usually does not mean a sensor has failed — it means the system needs to be told that your current pressures are the new “correct” reference. You have to do this every time you adjust the pressures, rotate the wheels or fit a different set, otherwise the light stays on or keeps returning. This guide shows how to reset (initialise) the TPMS on a Mk7 Golf in under a minute through the infotainment menu.

Which TPMS Does Your Golf Have?

Most Mk7 Golfs sold in the UK and Europe use an indirect tyre-pressure monitoring system. Instead of a pressure sensor inside each wheel, it watches the wheel-speed signals from the ABS: a tyre losing pressure shrinks slightly in diameter and spins fractionally faster, and the car spots the difference. Because it learns from a baseline, indirect TPMS must be re-set whenever you change the pressures — there is nothing to “read,” only a reference to store. Higher-spec and some later cars use a direct system with valve-mounted sensors; the reset menu path is the same.

When You Need to Reset the TPMS

  • After checking or adjusting the tyre pressures (including seasonal changes).
  • After changing one or more wheels or tyres.
  • After rotating the wheels front-to-back.
  • After deliberately running higher pressures for a fully loaded car or motorway trip.

Set Your Pressures First

The reset stores whatever pressures are in the tyres at that moment, so they must be correct before you initialise. Set all four (cold) to the figures on the placard, which is on the driver’s door pillar or behind the fuel-filler flap. Use the laden column if you are carrying passengers or luggage. Do not reset with a tyre that is already low — you would simply teach the car that the low pressure is normal.

How to Reset the TPMS — Infotainment Method

  1. Make sure all four tyres are at the correct cold pressure and the spare (if monitored) is correct too.
  2. Switch the ignition on (engine running or in accessory mode — the screen must be live).
  3. Press the “CAR” button on the dash or the on-screen Car/Vehicle menu.
  4. Open “Setup” (the settings cog), then select “Vehicle” or “Tyres” depending on your infotainment version (Composition/Discover).
  5. Select “Set” (sometimes shown as “Store tyre pressures” or “SET”).
  6. Choose “Confirm” to save the current pressures as the reference.
  7. The warning light should be out. The system is now reset.

The car finishes learning the new baseline over the first few miles of normal driving, so the light can take a short drive to confirm it is fully happy after the reset.

If Your Golf Has a Button Instead of a Menu

A few early or lower-spec Mk7s with the basic cluster have a physical TPMS reset button (often low on the dash to the left of the wheel, or in the Car menu reached with the cluster stalk). Where fitted, set the pressures, switch the ignition on, then press and hold the button until a chime or message confirms the pressures have been stored.

Light Won’t Go Out? Work Through This

  • One tyre genuinely low: the system is doing its job — find and fix the leak, re-inflate, then reset.
  • Reset not stored: repeat the menu steps and make sure you press Confirm, not just exit the menu.
  • Big front-to-rear pressure split: set them to the placard figures; an indirect system dislikes large mismatches.
  • Direct-sensor car with a flashing (not steady) light: a flashing TPMS light points to a sensor or system fault rather than a low tyre. The car will have logged a code — you can look it up on autodtcs.com to see whether it is a dead sensor battery or a wiring issue.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Mk7 Golf have a sensor in each wheel?

Most have an indirect system that uses the ABS wheel-speed sensors, so there is nothing inside the wheel. Some higher-spec and later cars use direct valve-mounted sensors. Either way the reset is done from the same menu.

Why does the light come back on a few days after resetting?

Either a tyre is slowly losing air, or you reset the system while a tyre was already a little low. Re-check all four cold pressures against the placard and reset again.

Do I need to reset after just topping up the air?

Yes. Any pressure change shifts the baseline an indirect system relies on, so re-store the values after any adjustment.

Can cold weather trigger the warning?

Yes — pressure drops roughly 1 psi for every 5 °C fall, so a cold snap can be enough to light the warning. Re-inflate to the placard figure and reset.

After tyre or seasonal-wheel work it is also worth confirming the service reminder is clear — see our Mk7 Golf service indicator reset guide.
