Re-initialise the Sunroof

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated August 31, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Kia Venga Mk1 (YN) 2010-2019.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

If the sliding/tilting sunroof on your Kia Venga (YN, 2010–2019) stops auto-opening or auto-closing, or only moves while you hold the switch — typically after a flat battery, a disconnect or a blown fuse — it needs re-initialising so it relearns its end positions. It takes under a minute with the ignition on.

Where the Switch Is

The sunroof switch is in the overhead console between the front interior lights.

How to Re-initialise the Sunroof

  1. Turn the ignition ON.
  2. Press the switch in the close/tilt direction and hold it until the roof is fully closed, then release.
  3. Press and hold the close direction again — the roof tilts up and moves slightly; release when it stops.
  4. Press and hold the close direction once more — the roof now runs its learning cycle automatically (tilt down, slide open, then slide closed). Hold until it finishes and closes, then release.
  5. Check that one-touch open and close both work again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did my sunroof stop working automatically?

The roof control unit stores its tilt and slide limits. Losing power erases them, so the roof will only inch along under a held switch until you run the re-initialisation to teach the positions again.

The roof still won’t auto-run after re-initialising.

Repeat the procedure, holding the switch through the whole tilt-down, slide-open and slide-close cycle without releasing early. If it still won’t complete, check the sunroof fuse and that the guide rails are clean and not obstructed.
