Reset the Tyre Pressure Warning Light

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated September 2, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Toyota RAV4 Mk2 (XA20) 2000-2005.

The tyre-pressure monitoring system on the RAV4 watches your tyre pressures and warns you if one drops. After you adjust the pressures or fit different wheels, you re-initialise the system so it learns the current pressures as its new baseline. Here is how to do it.

  1. Set all four tyres to the correct cold pressure first. The recommended figures are on the placard in the driver’s door opening.
  2. Turn the ignition on. The engine can stay off.
  3. Press and hold the “SET” button on the lower dash, below the steering wheel.
  4. Keep holding until the tyre-pressure warning light goes out. It may blink a few times first, then switch off.
  5. Release the button. The system is now reset and will treat the current pressures as its reference.

Good to know

Not every RAV4 of this generation has this system. If your car has no “SET” button and no tyre-pressure warning light, it is not fitted with tyre-pressure monitoring and there is nothing to reset.

Always set the pressures correctly before you reset, because the system stores whatever it reads at the moment of reset as the target. After resetting, drive for a few minutes so the sensors report in and the system settles on the new baseline.

FAQ

Where is the SET button?

It is on the lower dash, below the steering wheel and column. It is a small dedicated button, separate from the steering-wheel controls.

Why do I need to reset it?

Reset after you adjust the tyre pressures or change one or more wheels or tyres. The reset tells the system to re-learn the current pressures as its new reference, so it warns you accurately from that point on.

The light stays on after I reset. What now?

Set the pressures correctly first, then press and hold SET again. If the light still will not clear, one tyre may genuinely be low, or a sensor may be faulty. Check each pressure with a gauge before assuming the system is at fault.

Does my RAV4 even have this system?

Only if it has both a “SET” button on the lower dash and a tyre-pressure warning light. If either is missing, your car was not fitted with the system.
