Disconnect and Reconnect the Battery

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated September 3, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Kia Sorento Mk2 (XM) 2009-2014.

Disconnecting the 12V battery cuts all power so you can safely carry out accessory work, store the car, or clear an electrical fault. On the second-generation Sorento the battery sits in the engine bay, on the right-hand side beside the air-filter box.

The 12V battery sits under the air-intake duct on the right of the engine bay – disconnect the negative terminal first.
  1. Turn the ignition key to the OFF position and remove it, then switch off all electrical consumers.
  2. Before disconnecting, note your radio preset stations and settings, along with the audio security code if one is set, as these are lost when power is cut.
  3. Disconnect the NEGATIVE (minus) terminal first and move the clamp aside so it cannot touch the post.
  4. Disconnect the POSITIVE terminal.
  5. If you will work near pyrotechnic components such as airbags or seat-belt pretensioners, wait 3 minutes after disconnecting before starting work.
  6. To reconnect, reverse the order: fit the POSITIVE terminal first, then the NEGATIVE last, and tighten both clamps.

After reconnecting

Once power is restored, reset the date and time, and re-enter your radio presets and user preferences. The electric windows and, if fitted, the sunroof will need re-initialising; each is a separate quick procedure.

Good to know

Wear eye protection and keep sparks and flames away from the battery, as the gases it gives off are explosive. On this generation, reconnecting the same battery needs no coding.

FAQ

Which terminal do I disconnect first?

Always take the negative (minus) terminal off first when disconnecting, and put the positive on first when reconnecting, leaving the negative until last.

Where is the battery on the Sorento?

It is in the engine bay, on the right-hand side next to the air-filter box.

What will I lose when I disconnect the battery?

The clock, your radio presets and any user preferences are cleared, and the electric windows and sunroof lose their initialisation, so each needs re-setting afterwards.

Do I need to wait after disconnecting?

Only if you will be working near the airbags or seat-belt pretensioners. In that case, wait 3 minutes after disconnecting before you start.
