Reinitialise the Sunroof

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated September 2, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Kia Sorento Mk2 (XM) 2009-2014.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

If your Sorento has the optional electric glass sunroof, a battery disconnect or a flat battery wipes its calibration, so one-touch and auto operation stop working properly. Re-initialising it teaches the sunroof its fully-open and fully-closed limits again, restoring smooth tilt, slide and one-touch movement.

  1. Turn the ignition ON.
  2. Open the sunshade so the glass panel is clear.
  3. Close the sunroof fully, then release the switch.
  4. Press and hold the sunroof CLOSE switch for about 10 seconds; the sunroof tilts and moves slightly to begin the calibration.
  5. Release the switch, then press it again and keep it held.
  6. Wait while the sunroof runs through its full self-calibration cycle: tilt open, slide fully open, then slide closed.
  7. Release the switch once the cycle is complete, then check that tilt, slide and one-touch all work correctly.

Good to know

This only applies to cars fitted with the optional glass sunroof. If your Sorento has no sunroof switch on the roof console, there is nothing to re-initialise.

Run the procedure straight after any battery disconnect if the sunroof starts to misbehave. If it will not calibrate, or the panel stops part way through the cycle, have it checked by a workshop rather than forcing the switch.

FAQ

Why won’t my Sorento sunroof work properly after a battery change?

Disconnecting or flattening the battery erases the sunroof’s stored open and closed positions, so it loses one-touch and auto operation. Re-initialising it restores normal movement.

How do I reinitialise the sunroof?

Turn the ignition on, close the sunroof fully, then press and hold the CLOSE switch for about 10 seconds and keep holding through the full auto cycle of tilt open, slide open and slide close.

Do I need any tools?

No. The whole procedure is done from the overhead sunroof switch with the ignition on; no tools or diagnostic equipment are needed.

What if it stops mid-cycle?

Repeat the procedure from the start. If it still will not complete the calibration, have the sunroof checked by a workshop.
