Reset the Service Indicator

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated September 30, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the MG HS Mk1 2019-2023.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

A spanner or “Service Due” reminder in your MG HS (2019–present) means the countdown to the next scheduled service has run down. Once the work is done you clear it from the driver’s display — long-press the OK button on the right-hand steering-wheel pad while the Next Service screen is shown. It takes about ten seconds and needs no tools.

What the Service Message Means

The HS tracks the distance and time to its next scheduled service and shows a reminder in the instrument pack’s message centre as that point approaches. It is a maintenance reminder, not a fault. Clearing it only resets the counter — it does not carry out the service, so reset it once the work has actually been done, not simply to make the message disappear.

How to Reset the Service Indicator on the MG HS

  1. Switch the ignition on. Press START once without your foot on the brake (or leave the engine running) so the instrument pack is awake.
  2. Open the message centre. Using the arrow buttons on the right-hand multifunction steering wheel, scroll to the Setting menu.
  3. Select “Next Service”. Scroll to the Next Service item — the current maintenance information is displayed.
  4. Press and hold the OK button on the right-hand steering-wheel pad. Keep it held (a few seconds) until the service reminder resets.
  5. Release OK. The display returns to a full service countdown, and the spanner/“Service Due” message is cleared.

⚠️ Reset it only after the service is done. MG intends the HS service display to be reset by an MG dealer when they carry out the work. Doing it yourself is fine once you or an independent garage have completed the maintenance — but clearing it without servicing the car just hides a genuine reminder and leaves the interval tracking wrong.

If the Reminder Won’t Clear

  • Check you are on the Next Service screen in the message centre — a long press on the trip computer resets the journey data instead, not the service counter.
  • Hold OK for longer. A short press only selects; the reset needs a genuine long press of a few seconds.
  • Ignition must be on. The reset works with the ignition on or the engine running, but not with the car fully asleep.
  • A spanner light with a stored fault code is different. If a warning stays on and logs a code rather than a service message, decode it on autodtcs.com.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I reset the service light on an MG HS?

Switch the ignition on, use the right-hand steering-wheel arrows to reach the Setting → Next Service screen in the message centre, then press and hold the OK button until the reminder resets.

Where is the service reminder on the MG HS?

In the instrument-pack message centre, under the Setting menu as Next Service. You navigate and reset it entirely with the buttons on the right-hand side of the steering wheel.

Do I need a dealer to reset the MG HS service indicator?

No. MG expects the dealer to reset it after a service, but the long-press-OK method lets you clear it yourself once the maintenance is complete — useful if an independent garage did the work.

Is the reset the same for a 2020, 2021, 2022 or 2023 MG HS?

Yes — every first-generation HS uses the same long-press-OK method on the Next Service screen. The all-new HS launched in 2024 keeps a similar approach on its updated display.

Can I reset the service message without actually servicing the car?

You can, but you shouldn’t. Resetting only clears the counter; it doesn’t service the car, so you’d simply be hiding a due reminder and losing track of when maintenance is actually needed.

The spanner light is still on after resetting — why?

Make sure you held OK on the Next Service screen, not the trip computer, and held it long enough. If a warning light stays on with a stored fault code, that is a separate problem — look the code up on autodtcs.com.
