Enter the Hidden Diagnostic Menu

These instructions apply to the Nissan Titan Mk1 (A60) 2004-2015.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

The Nissan Titan (A60, 2004–2015) has a built-in combination-meter self-diagnosis mode you can open yourself with no scan tool. It sweeps the gauges, fills every LCD segment, lights the warning lamps the cluster controls and even shows the estimated battery voltage — the quickest way to prove the cluster itself is healthy when a gauge or warning light behaves oddly.

What the Self-Test Shows

Once running, the routine steps through a fixed set of checks:

  • A full gauge sweep, then a display of the present gauge values — so you can spot a stuck or lazy needle.
  • Every LCD segment of the odometer, trip meters and A/T position indicator lit at once, to compare against a known-good pattern.
  • Illumination of all cluster-controlled lamps and LEDs regardless of switch position — an unlit lamp points to a cluster fault rather than the system it warns about.
  • The estimated battery voltage and the driver’s seat-belt buckle-switch status.

How to Enter the Hidden Diagnostic Menu

You use the odometer/trip meter button on the cluster face — the same button that switches between ODO and TRIP A/B. Read the steps through first, because the mode is entered on a timer.

  1. Sit in the vehicle with the engine off and the ignition OFF.
  2. Press and hold the odometer/trip meter button, and while holding it turn the ignition to ON (do not start the engine).
  3. Keep holding for 5 to 8 seconds. When the mode starts, the odometer display shows tESt.
  4. Release the button — the gauges sweep within about 10 seconds and then show their present values.
  5. Press the button to advance through the tests in turn: all LCD segments lit, then the lamp/LED test, then the battery-voltage display, then the seat-belt buckle status.
  6. Turn the ignition OFF (or to ACC) to leave the mode.

If trip A or trip B is showing when you start, that trip reading is reset to zero as the mode opens — note the mileage first if you need it.

Reading the Result

Every segment, lamp and needle should respond. A dead LCD segment, a lamp that will not light, or a gauge that will not sweep points to a fault inside the cluster rather than the sensor feeding it — for example a fuel or temperature gauge that sweeps correctly here but reads wrong while driving usually means the sender is at fault, not the gauge. If a “FAIL” message flashes during the lamp test, the cluster has logged an internal fault. If the mode will not start at all, check the cluster’s power and ground supply first.

How to Exit

Switch the ignition OFF or to ACC. The cluster returns to normal at the next start and nothing has been changed — the mode only tests the display, lamps and gauges, it sets nothing and clears nothing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this clear warning lights or a service reminder? No. It is a display, lamp and gauge test only — it does not erase stored fault codes, and the A60 Titan has no resettable dashboard service reminder to begin with.

Will it show fault codes? The built-in mode runs a lamp, segment and gauge test and can flash a “FAIL” for an internal cluster fault. Reading engine or system trouble codes needs a diagnostic tool on the data link connector.

The mode will not start — what is wrong? The button must be held as you switch the ignition ON and kept down for the full 5 to 8 seconds until tESt appears. If it still will not start, the cluster power/ground or the cluster itself may be faulty.

Is it safe to run with the engine off? Yes — the mode runs with the ignition ON and engine off, and exits the moment you switch off.
