These instructions apply to the Nissan Xterra Mk2 (N50) 2005-2015.

If a gauge or warning lamp on your Nissan Xterra (N50, 2005–2015) is behaving oddly, the instrument cluster has a built-in self-diagnosis mode that proves whether the meter itself is at fault — no scan tool required. It runs a gauge sweep, lights every lamp the cluster drives, fills the LCD segments and even reports the battery voltage the cluster sees.

How to Enter the Self-Diagnosis Mode

Everything is done with the odometer/trip meter button below the gauges. The trick is holding it as the ignition comes on — read the steps first.

  1. With the engine off, sit in the Xterra with the ignition OFF.
  2. Press and hold the odometer/trip meter button, then turn the ignition to ON without starting the engine.
  3. Keep the button held for 5 to 8 seconds — the odometer display changes to tESt when the mode activates.
  4. Let go of the button. The gauges sweep across their range within about 10 seconds and then settle at their real readings.
  5. Each further press of the button steps to the next check: all LCD segments on, then every warning lamp and LED, then the estimated battery voltage, then the driver’s seat-belt switch status.
  6. Turn the ignition OFF or to ACC to close the mode.

Note that entering the mode with trip A or B on screen zeroes that trip counter, so jot the figure down first if it matters to you.

What Each Check Tells You

  • Gauge sweep: a needle that sticks or lags here is a gauge fault; a needle that sweeps cleanly but reads wrong on the road points to the sender instead.
  • Segment test: a missing block in the odometer or trip display is a dead LCD segment inside the cluster.
  • Lamp test: a warning lamp that refuses to light during the test is a cluster or bulb fault, not a problem with the system it monitors.
  • Voltage read-out: a quick sanity check of what the cluster thinks the battery is doing.

Exiting and What It Changes

Switching the ignition off ends the test and the Xterra behaves normally at the next start. The mode is read-only — it changes no settings, stores nothing and erases nothing. A flashing “FAIL” during the lamp step is the one exception worth noting: it means the cluster has logged an internal fault.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this reset a warning light or service reminder? No. It only exercises the display and lamps. The N50 Xterra has no resettable dashboard service reminder in any case.

Can I read engine fault codes this way? No — this is a cluster lamp, segment and gauge test. Engine codes need a scan tool on the diagnostic socket.

Nothing happens when I try to start the mode. Hold the button down as you switch to ON and keep it there the full 5 to 8 seconds until tESt shows. If it still fails, suspect the cluster’s power or ground feed.

Is it safe with the engine off? Yes — it is designed to run on ignition ON with the engine stopped.

If the check-engine lamp is on and you want to look up the code, our sister site autodtcs.com lists engine trouble codes.
