The Nissan Quest (RE52, 2011–2017) has a built-in combination-meter self-diagnosis mode you can open with no scan tool. It runs the gauges to zero and back, blinks the information-display dots and lets you confirm each meter works — the fastest way to tell a faulty cluster from a faulty sensor when a gauge or warning light misbehaves.
How to Enter the Self-Diagnosis Mode
You use the trip-reset switch on the cluster. The entry is on a timer, so read it through first.
- Turn the ignition OFF.
- Press and hold the trip-reset switch, and while holding it turn the ignition to ON (engine not running).
- The trip reading resets to 0000.0 — note your mileage first if trip A or B is showing.
- Within 7 seconds of the ignition coming on, press the trip-reset switch at least 3 times.
- The meter enters self-diagnosis: the speedometer, tachometer, coolant-temperature and fuel gauges all sweep to zero together, and the information-display dots blink alternately.
- Turn the ignition OFF to leave the mode.
Reading the Result
- Gauge that will not move: a needle that stays put here is a cluster fault; one that moves in the test but reads wrong on the road points to the sender.
- Missing display dots: a dot-matrix segment that will not light is an internal meter fault.
- Mode will not start: re-check the timing (hold as you switch to ON, then three presses inside seven seconds); if it still fails, the meter’s power or ground is suspect.
How to Exit
Switch the ignition off. The Quest returns to normal at the next start — the routine only tests the display and gauges, it changes nothing and clears no codes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this reset a warning light or the maintenance reminder? No — it is a display and gauge test only. The maintenance reminder is reset separately from the information display.
Can it read engine fault codes? No. This tests the cluster; engine codes need a scan tool on the diagnostic socket.
Is it safe with the engine off? Yes — it runs on ignition ON with the engine stopped and exits the moment you switch off.
If the engine warning lamp is lit and you need to look up a code, our sister site autodtcs.com lists engine trouble codes.
