Enter the Hidden Diagnostic Menu

These instructions apply to the Nissan Leaf Mk1 (ZE0) 2011-2017.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

The Nissan Leaf (ZE0, 2011–2017) has a built-in combination-meter self-diagnosis mode that checks the instrument display with no scan tool. Because the Leaf is electric, the test runs the EV-specific readouts — the power meter and the Li-ion battery gauges — rather than a rev counter, so it is the quickest way to tell a faulty display from a faulty sensor.

How to Enter the Self-Diagnosis Mode

You use the trip-reset switch, and the entry is on a timer — read it through first. The Leaf uses a power switch in place of a conventional ignition.

  1. Make sure the power switch is OFF.
  2. Turn the power switch ON while holding down the trip-reset switch (do not press the brake, so the car does not go to READY).
  3. The trip reading resets to 0000.0 — note your mileage first if trip A or B is showing.
  4. Within 7 seconds of switching on, press the trip-reset switch at least 3 times.
  5. Both the combination meter and the upper meter enter self-diagnosis: the speedometer, power meter, Li-ion battery temperature, capacity and available-charge gauges, the Eco indicator, driving-range and information displays all cycle so you can check each one.
  6. Turn the power switch OFF to leave the mode.

Reading the Result

  • A gauge or segment that will not respond points to a fault inside the meter rather than the system it reports.
  • The driving-range or battery-capacity gauge reads oddly here but the meter tests fine → suspect the sensing/battery-management side, not the display.
  • The mode will not start → re-check the timing (hold the trip switch as you power on, then three presses inside seven seconds); if it still fails, the meter’s power or ground is suspect.

How to Exit

Switch the power switch off. The Leaf returns to normal at the next start — the routine only tests the display, it changes nothing and clears no codes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this show battery state of health? No — it is a display/gauge test. It does not read the Li-ion battery’s health or capacity bars beyond confirming the gauges themselves work.

Can it read fault codes? No. Reading the EV system’s stored codes needs a diagnostic tool on the data link connector.

Is it safe? Yes — it runs with the power switch ON but the car not in READY, and touches nothing in the high-voltage system.

If a warning light is lit and you need to look up a code, our sister site autodtcs.com lists diagnostic trouble codes.
