Short answer: if the sunroof on your Mercedes C-Class W204 (2007–2014) won’t one-touch or stops working after a battery change, re-initialise it: with the ignition on, press and hold the roof switch in the close direction and keep holding through the whole close cycle until it stops. This re-teaches its end positions.
Why the Sunroof Needs Re-initialising
The tilting/sliding roof and the panoramic roof (where fitted) learn their end stops so one-touch and anti-trap know where fully-closed is. A battery disconnection or flat battery clears that reference, so the roof will only move while you hold the switch, or refuses to auto-close. Re-initialising teaches it the closed position again.
Re-initialise the Roof
- Turn the ignition on so the cluster is lit (engine off).
- Press and hold the roof switch in the CLOSE direction (push it to close/tilt-shut).
- Keep holding for several seconds (about 3–10) after it reaches fully closed — the roof runs a short self-learning cycle and may briefly move or settle once or twice. Do not release during this.
- Release once the roof has fully closed and stopped moving, then switch the ignition off and on and test one-touch. Anti-trap and auto-close are restored.
If holding close alone doesn’t restore it, use the open-then-close method: hold the switch to fully OPEN and keep holding a few seconds, then hold to fully CLOSE and keep holding 10–20 seconds through any settle before releasing.
If It Still Won’t Learn
If the roof reverses before it seals, run the hold-to-close cycle again so it can relearn the top position. If the switch does nothing at all, or it jams part-way, that points to a mechanism or motor fault rather than a lost initialisation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why won’t my W204 sunroof close with one touch after the battery?
It lost its learned end stops. Hold the roof switch in the close direction and keep holding through the whole close cycle until it stops — that re-initialises it.
Do I need a tool to reset the sunroof?
No — it’s done from the roof switch with the ignition on.
Does the panoramic roof reset the same way?
Yes — hold the close direction and let it complete its self-learning cycle. On a panoramic roof the sun blind is linked, so let the whole sequence finish.
The roof keeps stopping half-way — is it the reset?
If it moves but won’t complete the learn, repeat the hold-to-close cycle. If it physically jams or the motor is silent, that’s a mechanical fault, not a normalisation issue.
