An AdBlue message on a Fiat Talento (2016–2021) isn’t a breakdown — it’s a countdown telling you how far you can go before the diesel van refuses to restart. Top the tank up in time and it clears on its own. There’s no need for a garage or an “AdBlue delete”; here’s what the messages mean and how to fix it.
The Talento was Fiat’s badge-engineered version of the Renault Trafic III, built from 2016 until Fiat Professional withdrew it in 2021; it revived the ‘Talento’ name Fiat had last used on a small van in the early 1990s.
Reading the Countdown
AdBlue is an emissions fluid held in a separate tank (roughly 22–25 litres on this van). As it empties the dash steps up the urgency:
- “Top up AdBlue before 2400 km” — early heads-up.
- “Top up AdBlue before 1200 km” — sort it soon.
- “XXX miles lockout – fill AdBlue” — urgent, and repeats more often as the range falls.
- “0 miles lockout” — the engine won’t start until you refill. An empty AdBlue tank legally stops the van.
Fill up when the first message shows and you’ll never see the lockout — and do it before very cold nights, as AdBlue freezes below about −10°C.
Top Up and Clear the Warning

- Turn the engine and ignition fully off (properly off on stop-start vans, not on standby).
- Open the AdBlue filler — it’s separate from the diesel filler: open the front left-hand door to reach the flap, then undo the blue cap.
- Pour in AdBlue from a sealed bottle or pump — add several litres, not a splash, so the level sensor registers it. Wipe up spills; it marks paint and trim.
- Refit the cap, close the flap, start the engine and wait about 10 seconds stationary.
- Drive as normal. The warning stays until the system registers the top-up — sometimes only after a few minutes of driving — then it clears itself.
Already Locked Out at Zero?
Refill it the same way — add enough that the tank clearly reads a level, refit the cap and switch on. After a proper fill the Talento starts again and the countdown resets, with no dealer tool needed for a simple empty tank. If it still won’t start after a good refill and a short wait, that’s an SCR system fault (a sensor or the pump) rather than the fluid level, and needs a diagnostic read.
Skip the “AdBlue Delete”
Refilling costs a few pounds and two minutes. Deleting or remapping the AdBlue system is illegal for road use in the UK and EU, fails the MOT emissions test, and shows up on later diagnostics — keep the tank topped up instead.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Fiat Talento just a rebadged Renault Trafic?
Yes — the 2016–2021 Talento is Fiat’s version of the Renault Trafic III, sharing its running gear with the Nissan NV300 and Vauxhall/Opel Vivaro. Fiat dropped it in 2021 when it switched to the Stellantis (Peugeot-based) Scudo and Ducato range.
How do I reset the AdBlue warning on a Fiat Talento?
You don’t reset it by hand. Add a few litres of AdBlue, start the engine, wait around 10 seconds, then drive — the van registers the top-up and clears the message itself.
Where does the AdBlue go on a Talento?
In its own filler, not the diesel tank — open the front left-hand door to reach the flap and undo the blue cap.
Will the Talento still start with the AdBlue light on?
Yes, until the “0 miles” lockout. Once the countdown hits zero it won’t restart until you refill.
Is this the same as a Renault Trafic?
Yes — the Talento is a rebadged Trafic and shares the same AdBlue system, filler and self-clearing top-up, as do the Nissan NV300 and Vauxhall/Opel Vivaro.
