These instructions apply to the Fiat Talento 2016-2021.

A dead 12 volt battery is the usual reason a Fiat Talento (2016–2021) won’t turn over — a single click or a dead dashboard. On this van the battery lives in the engine bay, so a jump-start is easy once you connect the leads in the right order.
The Talento was Fiat’s badge-engineered version of the Renault Trafic III, built from 2016 until Fiat Professional withdrew it in 2021; it revived the ‘Talento’ name Fiat had last used on a small van in the early 1990s.
Before You Connect
- Bring the donor vehicle close but not touching; both ignitions off, handbrakes on.
- Use decent jump leads or a diesel-rated jump pack.
- Open the bonnet and identify the battery’s positive (+) and negative (−) terminals.
Jump-Start the Talento
- Red lead onto the flat battery’s positive (+).
- Other end of the red lead onto the donor’s positive (+).
- Black lead onto the donor’s negative (−).
- Other end of the black lead onto bare metal on the Talento’s engine — a bracket or lifting eye, well away from the flat battery. Earthing to the engine rather than the battery keeps any spark clear of battery gases.
- Run the donor a few minutes, then start the Talento. If it won’t catch, wait and try again rather than cranking continuously.
- With it running, remove the leads in reverse order — engine earth first, then donor negative, then the two positives.
- Drive for 20–30 minutes so the alternator recharges the battery.
With a jump pack, clamp positive to the battery positive and negative to that same engine earth point, then follow the pack’s instructions.
After a Jump-Start
If the battery went completely flat, expect to reset the clock and radio and to re-initialise the electric windows and tyre-pressure system. If the van dies the moment you unplug, or is flat again next morning, the battery is probably worn out or there’s a charging or drain fault to investigate.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Fiat Talento just a rebadged Renault Trafic?
Yes — the 2016–2021 Talento is Fiat’s version of the Renault Trafic III, sharing its running gear with the Nissan NV300 and Vauxhall/Opel Vivaro. Fiat dropped it in 2021 when it switched to the Stellantis (Peugeot-based) Scudo and Ducato range.
Where is the battery on a Fiat Talento?
In the engine compartment — open the bonnet to reach the terminals for a jump-start or replacement.
Where do I put the negative jump lead?
On clean, unpainted metal on the Talento’s engine — not on the flat battery’s negative post — so the connection spark stays away from the battery.
Can I push-start a Talento?
Only manual versions, and it isn’t recommended on a modern common-rail diesel; a proper jump-start is safer. Automatics can’t be push-started.
Is it the same as a Renault Trafic?
Yes — the Talento shares the Trafic’s engine-bay battery and layout, so the jump-start is identical, as it is on the Nissan NV300 and Vauxhall/Opel Vivaro.
