Open the Bonnet

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated September 25, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Fiat Talento 2016-2021.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Opening the bonnet on a Fiat Talento (2016–2021) is a two-stage job: an interior release handle pops the catch, then an exterior safety tab lets it lift. If the handle pulls loose with no resistance, the cable or latch has failed — covered below.

The Talento was Fiat’s badge-engineered version of the Renault Trafic III, built from 2016 until Fiat Professional withdrew it in 2021; it revived the ‘Talento’ name Fiat had last used on a small van in the early 1990s.

Open the Bonnet

  1. Inside the cab, pull the release handle (1) — low in the driver’s footwell by the door. The bonnet pops up at the front.
  2. At the front, push the safety tab (2) to the left as you lift, releasing the secondary catch.
  3. Lift the bonnet; the gas struts hold it open (no prop rod).
  4. Before reaching in, make sure the wiper stalk is in the park position.

Closing It Safely

  • Check nothing has been left in the bay and nothing is on the catch.
  • Lower to about 30 cm, then let it drop to latch under its own weight.
  • Check it’s properly locked — don’t drive on the safety catch alone.

If the Bonnet Won’t Open

A handle that pulls loose with no tension means the release cable has failed — a known wear point. Try again with a helper pressing down on (or gently lifting) the bonnet while you pull the handle. If the cable is genuinely broken, the latch must be freed at the front, from underneath or through the grille — a careful job — then renew the cable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Fiat Talento just a rebadged Renault Trafic?

Yes — the 2016–2021 Talento is Fiat’s version of the Renault Trafic III, sharing its running gear with the Nissan NV300 and Vauxhall/Opel Vivaro. Fiat dropped it in 2021 when it switched to the Stellantis (Peugeot-based) Scudo and Ducato range.

Where is the bonnet release on a Fiat Talento?

Inside the cab, low in the driver’s footwell by the door — pull handle 1, then release the exterior tab 2 at the front.

My bonnet won’t open — what now?

If the handle has gone slack the cable has likely failed — have someone press or lift the bonnet while you pull, or free the latch from the front, then renew the cable.

How is it held open?

By gas struts — no prop rod. If it won’t stay up, the struts are worn.

Is it the same as a Renault Trafic?

Yes — as a rebadged Renault Trafic it shares the same body, so the handle, tab and struts work the same across the Renault Trafic, Nissan NV300 and Vauxhall/Opel Vivaro.
