Reset the Oil Life

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated September 27, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Mk3 (K2XX) 2014-2018.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

The 2014–2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 (K2XX) uses the GM Oil Life System to track oil condition and shows CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON when a service is due. After you change the oil and filter, you clear it yourself from the Driver Information Center (DIC) with the steering-wheel buttons — no tool needed. This is the US-market procedure.

On the 2014-2018 Silverado the oil-life reset is on the DIC Oil Life screen – page to it with the steering-wheel buttons and hold the checkmark. US-market truck shown; illustrative frame.
  1. Switch the ignition to ON without starting — press ENGINE START/STOP once without the brake, or turn the key to ON.
  2. Using the DIC buttons on the steering wheel, page through the Driver Information Center to the Oil Life / “Remaining Oil Life” screen.
  3. Press and hold the thumbwheel (or the check-mark / SET button) for a few seconds until a reset prompt appears.
  4. Select YES to confirm. The oil life changes to 100%.
  5. Switch off. The CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON message will no longer appear at start-up.

No steering-wheel DIC buttons? On a base Silverado, turn the ignition to ON (engine off) and slowly press the accelerator pedal fully three times within five seconds; if the display shows 100%, the system is reset.

FAQ

My Silverado doesn’t have DIC buttons — can I still reset it?

Yes — use the accelerator-pedal method: ignition ON, press the pedal fully three times within five seconds.

Does resetting the oil life change the oil?

No. It only resets the monitor. Reset it after the oil and filter have actually been changed.

The message says “CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON” — is that the same reset?

Yes. That is the GM Oil Life System message and it clears with the reset above.

How often does the Silverado ask for an oil change?

The GM Oil Life System is condition-based rather than a fixed mileage — usually around 7,500–10,000 miles, but sooner with towing, short trips or dusty conditions.

If your Silverado also shows an engine warning light with the oil message, look the code up on autodtcs.com before clearing anything.
