If your Nissan Qashqai J10 (2006–2013) has the Nissan Intelligent Key (push-button start) and the fob battery goes flat, the car stops recognising it — but there is a built-in backup method that lets you unlock and start as normal.
How to start a Qashqai J10 with a dead key fob battery
- Slide out the hidden mechanical key blade from the Intelligent Key and use it to unlock the driver’s door.
- Get in, move the selector to P or N, and press the footbrake firmly (press the clutch fully on a manual).
- Touch the ignition switch (the start button) with the Intelligent Key — a chime sounds as the car detects the transponder.
- Within 10 seconds of the chime, push the ignition switch while keeping the brake pressed. The engine starts.
The Intelligent Key warning light may keep blinking afterwards even though the key is inside — touch the key to the ignition switch again to clear it. Replace the fob battery (a CR2016 coin cell on the Intelligent Key) as soon as you can.
Frequently asked questions
What if my Qashqai J10 uses a key you turn in the ignition?
Then a flat fob battery will not stop you starting — the transponder is read when you turn the key, so start as normal. Only the remote locking buttons stop working until you fit a new battery.
Where is the hidden key blade?
Inside the Intelligent Key itself — slide the small catch and pull the metal blade out. It unlocks the driver’s door when central locking won’t respond.
If the immobiliser or key warning light stays on after a fresh battery, you can check the stored fault code on autodtcs.com.
