After the 12 V battery has been disconnected or run flat on a petrol Nissan Qashqai J10 (2006–2013), the engine often idles high, hunts or stalls until the throttle is re-taught. The full relearn (Idle Air Volume Learning) is an owner job on the HR16DE and MR20DE petrol engines — no scan tool needed.
Only do this with no engine fault lights showing; if the engine-management light is on for an airflow or throttle fault, fix that first.
How to relearn the idle on a Qashqai J10 (petrol)
- Warm the engine to normal temperature, then switch everything off (A/C, lights, heater blower, radio, rear screen).
- Accelerator learn: with the pedal fully released, turn the ignition ON for ~2 seconds, OFF, and wait 10 seconds.
- Throttle learn: pedal released, turn the ignition ON — you should hear the throttle move over ~10 seconds — then OFF and wait 10 seconds.
- Idle Air Volume Learning: start the engine and bring it to temperature. Turn the ignition ON, wait 3 seconds, then fully press and release the accelerator 5 times within 5 seconds.
- Wait 7 seconds, then hold the accelerator fully down ~20 seconds until the engine-check light stops blinking and stays on.
- Within 3 seconds of it going steady, release the pedal. Start the engine and let it idle; blip the throttle a couple of times to settle it.
If it doesn’t take, switch off for 60 seconds and repeat. A dirty throttle body is a common reason the idle won’t settle — clean it before relearning if the car has high mileage.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my Qashqai idle high after a battery change?
Disconnecting the battery wipes the throttle’s learned idle position, so it idles high or hunts until you run the relearn above.
Does this work on the diesel?
This pedal procedure is for the petrol HR16DE/MR20DE engines. The diesels relearn differently and may need a tool.
If the engine-management light stays on, you can look up the fault code on autodtcs.com.
