Replace the Wiper Blades

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 2, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the BMW X5 Mk2 (E70) 2006-2013.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

The BMW X5 (E70, 2006–2013) takes a 24-inch driver’s blade and a 20-inch passenger blade on 2008–2013 cars (early 2007 cars use 24″/22″), plus a separate rear blade. There’s no electronic “service position” on the E70 — you lift the arms by hand to swap the blades.

Blade Sizes

  • 2008–2013: driver’s side 24″, passenger side 20″.
  • 2007 cars: driver’s side 24″, passenger side 22″.
  • Rear screen: a dedicated rear blade (around 15–18″ depending on year).
  • The fronts use BMW’s hook/claw-style fitting — buy blades listed for the E70 X5 so the adapter matches.

How to Replace the Front Wiper Blades

  1. With the wipers parked, lift a wiper arm away from the glass until it stays up on its spring.
  2. Turn the blade across the arm, release the clip/catch where it meets the hook, and slide the old blade off.
  3. Slide the new blade on until it clicks, then fold it back in line with the arm.
  4. Lower the arm gently onto the screen — don’t let it snap down and chip the glass.
  5. Repeat for the other blade, then run the wipers on a wet screen to check for clean, chatter-free wiping.

Replacing the Rear Blade

Lift the rear arm, unclip the blade at the center fitting and slide it off, then fit the new rear-specific blade the same way. The rear uses a different fitting from the fronts, so order the rear blade separately.
