Later BMW X5 (E70, 2006–2013) models fitted with Auto Start-Stop (MSA) shut the engine off at a standstill. You can switch it off with a single button, but it turns itself back on at every restart.
How to Turn Off Auto Start-Stop on a BMW X5 (E70)
- With the engine running, find the MSA button (an “A” inside a circular arrow) near the start button or gear selector.
- Press it once. The dash shows the start-stop is off and the engine will no longer cut out at stops.
- To turn it back on, press the button again (or simply restart the car).
Why It Comes Back On
Auto Start-Stop defaults to “on” at every engine start, so the button is a per-drive toggle rather than a permanent setting. There’s no owner menu to make “off” stick.
Note that the system also won’t stop the engine on its own if the battery charge is low, the cabin isn’t yet at temperature, or the car is on a steep slope — that’s normal, not a fault.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does my X5 E70 have Auto Start-Stop?
Only later (facelift/LCI) cars from around 2010 on. If there’s no “A in a circle” button, your car isn’t fitted with it.
Why won’t the engine stop at lights even with it on?
Start-Stop only acts when conditions are met — battery well charged, engine and cabin warm, level ground. It stays dormant otherwise, which is by design.
If a start-stop or battery charge warning appears, look up the code on autodtcs.com.
