The Drive Mode button on the Hyundai Tucson Mk3 (TL, 2015–2020) lets you switch the car’s character between a relaxed everyday setting and a sharper one. It changes throttle response and steering weight — it does not make the car faster, just more or less eager. Here’s where it is and what each mode does.
Where the Button Is
The MODE button sits on the center console next to the gear lever, at the top of the small cluster of buttons there (above the Downhill Brake Control and Auto Stop buttons). It’s marked with a circular arrow and the word MODE.
How to Change Drive Mode

- With the car running, press the MODE button to cycle between the available modes.
- The selected mode shows briefly in the instrument cluster.
- Stop on the mode you want; the setting stays until you change it or restart.
What Each Mode Does
- Normal — the default balance of response and economy for everyday driving.
- Sport — holds gears a little longer (on automatics), sharpens throttle response and adds steering weight for a more connected feel. It uses slightly more fuel, so most owners leave the car in Normal day to day.
Good to Know
Drive Mode is about feel, not outright power — the engine makes the same peak output in every mode. On the diesel and manual cars the main change you’ll notice is throttle sharpness and steering weight. The car returns to its default mode behavior on restart.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the MODE button do on a Hyundai Tucson?
It switches the drive mode between Normal and Sport, changing throttle response and steering weight. It doesn’t increase engine power.
Does Sport mode use more fuel?
A little, because it sharpens throttle response and (on automatics) holds revs longer. For the best economy, leave the car in Normal.
Is it safe to change drive mode while driving?
Yes. You can press MODE on the move; the change takes effect smoothly.
