Short answer: the 2.4 D-4D (2GD-FTV) Hilux sold in the UK and Europe from 2016–2020 does not use AdBlue. It meets Euro 6 using exhaust gas recirculation and a diesel particulate filter (DPF), with no selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system and no AdBlue tank to fill.
Which Hilux use AdBlue?
AdBlue (a urea solution, also called DEF) is only needed on engines fitted with an SCR catalyst. On the eighth-generation Hilux:
- 2.4 D-4D (2GD-FTV): no AdBlue — EGR + DPF only.
- 2.8 D-4D (1GD-FTV): no AdBlue on most UK/EU 2016–2020 trucks; some later and other-market versions added an SCR/AdBlue system, which is when an “AdBlue” gauge and “Low AdBlue level” message appear.
The quickest way to tell: if your dashboard has an AdBlue level gauge or you have a blue-capped filler next to the diesel filler, your truck has SCR. No gauge and a single diesel filler means no AdBlue.
“Reset the AdBlue warning” — what to do
If your Hilux has no SCR system, there is no AdBlue warning to reset — a diesel warning you are seeing is more likely the DPF or the oil-maintenance reminder instead. If your truck does have SCR, the “Low AdBlue” message clears automatically after you top the tank up with the correct amount of fresh AdBlue; it will not clear if you add too little or use contaminated fluid.
FAQ
Do I need to add anything to the fuel? No — just the correct low-sulfur diesel. Use the specified low-ash (low-SAPS) engine oil to keep the DPF healthy.
I keep getting a diesel warning but have no AdBlue. Check whether it is the DPF “full” message — that is cleared by regeneration, not AdBlue.
If a diesel-emissions fault code (for example a Pxxxx SCR or DPF code) is stored, decode it on autodtcs.com.
